When i play cello i know that my arm hurts because i need to relax my shoulder but i cant figure out how to relax my shoulder and am and still play?

First of all try thinking about relaxing your shoulder rather than actually trying to do it. This is a common Alexander Technique trick. It usually helps allot.

If that fails, get somebody to gently pull your arm away from you, but only gently (there is no intention to cause injury).

When you're playing, try concentrating on your shoulder very hard (THINKING not doing), and for a little while try thinking mainly about your shoulder, and play without any emotion, as your neck and shoulders tend to stiffen up if you do that.

Remember - the priority is to get rid of the ache, not to play the notes right. If it helps, you could use this idea whilst playing scales very slowly.

What are considered to be the most important pieces composed for violin?

Well... Bach's 6 sonatas and partitas for solo violin sums up a lot of what the violin can do in terms of counterpoint. Hardest would be chaconne of the first partita.
Paganini's 24 caprices; all of them very very very hard. They're the last of the "studies" that you would attempt (unless you were very good) and show what the violin can do in terms of technique; eg. Ricochet, sautille, spicatto, trills, tremelos, fingered octaves, tenths, large string crossings, very high positions, fast scales and arpeggios...

The four greatest violin concertos:

Max Bruch, G minor
Beethoven (of course)
Brahms
Mendelssohn E minor :)

I'm sure there are lots more of important violin works but I can't just think of any right now.

How can you tell a good banjo?

Of course with any instrument the true answer is "whatever sounds good".

The important sound-affecting parts of a banjo are primarily the wood it's made from (maple is a popular choice for banjos) and whether or not it has a tone ring (brass is good material for that)

The materials used can very all over the map, and everybody will have their favourites.

One sign of a poor quality banjo is that the body is cast in aluminum. These are very common mass produced banjos that are sold under made-up brand names.

Your best bet is to talk to a reputable banjo dealer.
