Tahiti

Tahiti was became officially an overseas territory of France in 1957. Tahitians are French citizens and have the civil and political rights of France. In 1998 Tahiti was granted the right by France to rule themselves internally. Tahiti has its own president and assembly, and makes its own budget and laws.

Tahiti is located by Fiji. It is a smallish island, and is shaped oddly. Here is a picture of it:

Transits of Venus occur in pairs, eight years apart, approximately once every 120 years. Cook's ship, the 'Endeavour', departed England, on 25 August 1768. Cook reached Tahiti in time for his crew and scientists to set up their instrumentation necessary to observe and report on the transit, which occurred on 3 June 1769.

In Tahitian, "Happy New Year" can be translated as "Ia Oe Ia 'Oe E Teie Ao" which literally means "May you live to see the new year." Tahitian is a Polynesian language spoken in French Polynesia and is closely related to other languages in the region such as Hawaiian and Maori. The phrase reflects the cultural importance of celebrating the passage of time and the beginning of a new year in Tahitian society.

A nonstop flight from Paris to Papeete is 18 hours 35 minutes. But obviously all flights go through Los Angeles, otherwise there would be an arguement between if Singapore-Newark service is longer or Paris-Papeete service is longer.

And I'm not even sure if Air France can handle that 18 hour journey..... :)

Christian Protestanism is the most widely practiced religion in Tahiti (50%), with Catholicism coming in a somewhat close second (35%). Mormos, Sanitos, Adventistes, and Jehovah's witnesses make up the rest of the population. As you can see, the island is overwhelmingly Christian.
