What is taiwan's human environment interaction?
We attempt to provide a case study of human-environment interactions from the central area of the Yangtze Delta in east China. This area is called Taihu (Tai lake) Plain featured with lakes and rivers, in which has formed the largest city of Suzhou (Soochow) with a 2500-year history (back to Spring & Autumn Period, 770~475BC). About 20 kilometers southeast of Suzhou a largest buried settlement has been excavated from the bottom of a medium-size lake (Chenghu) in recent years. Field investigation on archaeology, geomorphology and sedimentology shows that this settlement spans ca ~5000 years, from Songze culture (6500~5500aBP) to Song Dynasty (1127~1279AD). The formation, evolution and subsequent transference of this settlement have close relations to environmental changes and human activities. Among them floods, lakeshore retreat, damages of natural vegetation and overuse of lowland (or wetlands) as farmland become the dominant causes. The word of Suzhou consists of two Chinese characters, "su" and "zhou". Here 'zhou' is a common word used for a piece of low land (or just emerged from the water) on which people can settle down. But "su" can be used to express and explain the whole history of the human-environment interactions since it can be disassembled into three basic parts with individual meaning. The top part means a piece of land with reed and weed, standing for a natural ecology and environment. The lower left part is 'fish', indicating a water country (wetland) yielding fishes as the best natural food for people. Besides, the lower right part is 'grain' (or Grammineae), supporting that this land can also be cultivated with crops (as farmland). For the future human-environment system our effort is to harmonize the proportions among these three parts. (NSFC project No.40571170)

How are Taiwan and china different from each other?
As of now....
1. Taiwan's GDP per capita is significantly higher, if we go by PPP method of GDP per capita (which takes a much stronger consideration into realtive living cost and inflations etc) the IMF's 2010 stats had Taiwan as #21 in the world, which puts it right in the same pack as the UK / Germany / France. China is #95 last year, it's improving rapidly but still has a long way to go.
2. Taiwan is runned by a democratic system, with very high participation and well balanced representation. China's government is ranned by the Chinese Communist Party, and not open to general election as of yet.
3. Taiwan has a stronger influence by the US and Japan due to it's history, for example baseball is very big in Taiwan but a rare sport in China.

If by developed, you mean a second world country, then yes, Taiwan is developed. Although they do not receive as much income per year as Americans do, the cost of living there is very low (I bought 20 t-shirts for only 60 USD, and they were pretty good quality).
Taiwan is one of the four Asian Tigers and it is classified as a highly advance country/economy by the IMF and the World Bank. Taiwan produces quite a large portion of the world technology and they are most known for their advance computer chips.

What would Chiang Kai-sheck like to see?
Chiang Kai Shek was a lieutenant of Sun Yat-Sen, who had guided the revolution of 1911 that overthrew the imperial Manchu throne and gave the people of China their chance for freedom. In 1927 Chiang emerged from the civil wars that ravaged China after the revolution as the leader of the Kuomintang Party and the general of the small but well-trained army. His dream was the unification and modernization of his country. The sprawling land of china was disunited by the enmities of civil war, by age-long sectionalisims, by difference in languages, and by lack of inter-communication among the provinces. Opposed to Chiang were the communists, a growing power in the rural districts; the provincial governors, jealous of their loss of power from the days of the Manchus; and the warlords, those bizarre brigands who gouged the land and the people at every turn. Chiang actually had to conquer China to save the country from itself. Much of this conquest was in the field, but much of it was by negotiation. But even in victory, he still had to awaken the sleeping citizens to the necessity of a strong China. And looking over the whole scene was Japan. Chiang knew that Japan had its eyes on China and he knew he did not have much time before they would invade. So in a short time, he had to modernize China. By 1930 he had made great strides in that attempt. Modern schools and industries were firmly established in all great cities of eastern china. The country was well on its way to a place in the sun when Japan did indeed attack the Chinese province of Manchuria in 1931. In 1932 they attacked Shanghai. After some other invasions, in 1937 they struck at the heart of China-Peiping.
