The Illuminati

The Illuminati are an underground organization on scientists who hold a grudge against the Catholic church for suppressing them and science in general. The Church has been an outspoken opponent to science for all of its history. The original crime against science was the suppression and denial of Galileo and his ideals. When the church made him refute his beliefs and put him under house arrest, the Illuminati became committed to achieveing retribution for Galileo. Though today they are said to be extinct, many still believe in their fight against the opressive church.

Consider for a moment that the governments of the world have been in the business of governance for a very long time, and while people (like sheep) can be steered in a direction for a short time, it is difficult at best to get any sized group to a chosen destination. The supposition that a secret society of human herders are driving the events of the world toward some malevolent ultimate end is ludicrous at best.

Besides, no credible evidence that any rational person would accept exists to prove the existence of the Illuminati as depicted in popular fiction like that of Dan Brown and the other conspiracy mongers.

Those who choose to surrender their ability to guide their own lives and sublimate their choices to some phantom boogeyman will eventually find themselves in a hole of their own construction. Unfortunately, they will never accept that they dug the hole themselves, no matter the mountain of evidence that is dumped over them.

Considering that the real Illuminati broke up in 1785, the leaders of Saudi Arabia are not Illuminati. However, conspiracy theorists like to allege that the Saudi leadership is part of some international conspiracy, because all leaders must be part of a conspiracy.

There are conspiracies that surround the shift of European policies towards Enlightenment values that often use a motif of the Illuminati as a shadowy cabal pushing humans towards Enlightenment values.
