Timing Belts and Chains

Timing belts and chains are used in an internal-combustion engine to synchronize the opening and closing of the engine’s valves. The belt also drives other components such as the pumps and alternator. The belt is made of fiberglass or Kevlar-reinforced rubber.

How many miles can a timing chain last on a 2003 Nissan Maxima?

Freind was told by our Nissan dealer chains last 150k on 2003 Maxima. His chain destroyed his engine at 128k miles. Metal shavings from chain got his engine, he even ran full syn & had all reciepts showing it changed at 3k like clock work! Take a guess who lost out?

Chains dont last that much longer than todays belts can, chains only cost a lot more to replace. Guess who wins more by our replacing chains vs belts, $1000 vs $230 in parts.

My 1988 Max had belt, at 439k miles I sold it. None of its belts ever failed, 110k mile replacements.

How do you replace a timing belt on a 2 point 2 liter Dodge 94 Shadow?

If you have never done it, I suggest taking it to someone. However, if you have the tools and want to do it yourself. You will need to jack up the car first. Remove right front wheel. This is so you can get to all bolts on the front plastic cover. Remove the bolts, remove the cover/covers if 2 piece. Losen the timing belt tensioner, move away, take off belt, replace, tighten pretty tight with hand. Make sure no slack is present! But not extremely too tight. Retighten all bolts and covers and install wheel. NOTE: If timing belt was broken this is a whole different story. Do not try..Unless you know how..

How do you change the timing belt in a 1995 Olds Achieva?

You don't, as it has no belt. It has a chain that should last the lifetime of the engine.

Why is the timing chain noisy in 2.4 quad 4?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

The guides are probably bad from the engine heat and wear.

When the tensioner has been replaced, you must take something like a small screw driver and press the little plunger, that pushes out the shoe, all the way in and then it will release the lock and apply pressure against the shoe. Most people think that the oil pressure releases it but it doesn't, the oil pressure will keep the pressure against it only after you unlock it by pressing it all the way in.

No it is not. Before it would hurt the valve train, something would have to happen at a very high RPMs. The timing chain going out will not hurt the valves are the head.

What is the timing for a 1983 Motorhome-454 cubic inch engine The motorhome is 31' in lenght Is the timing setting the same for all 454 engines made in 1983 If so then you know the answer?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

First of all, the size of the motorhome has absolutely nothing to do with how to repair the engine. Specify which make of engine it is, and you may get better results. Tgzzzz: I don't understand how someone could write the above incredibly ignorant comment. If you don't know what a 454 is, stop talking and start listening! Hi! I have a 1984 motorhome (31' ;-) with a Chevy P30-series chassis, 454 engine. The timing is on the air filter cover and is listed as 4 deg. BTDC. I tried looking this up online for myself--the Chevy-published info for this chassis & engine didn't indicate a timing, and directed me to look other than where the timing info _was_ located--and I haven't found it (and I've found a lot of red herrings). You might start w/4 deg., but perhaps a "history of the 454" would indicate model changes which might help with whether or not what I'm seeing would be of use to you.
