An anytime return ticket on Virgin is £123 standard class. If you can book in advance, travel off-peak or use London Midland or Chiltern Railways, the price can be considerably cheaper.

Currently (as of March 3, 2013), it costs $2.75 for a single ride ticket, and $2.50 per ride for a pay-per-ride Metrocard.

There is now a $1 fee for purchasing a new pay-per-ride (plastic) Metrocard, so always refill cards whenever possible. You are exempted from the $1 fee if your Metrocard is expiring or damaged.

The same Metrocards are used for the city buses. Pay-per-ride Metrocards give you a free transfer between the subway and bus, or between buses.

You can also purchase Unlimited Metrocards, which give you an unlimited number of rides for a flat fee. There is a 30-day Unlimited card ($112), and a 7-day Unlimited card ($30).

Keep in mind that Unlimited cards will not work again for 5 minutes after they are swiped. This is to deter people from using one card for multiple people. You can still use the Unlimited cards for multiple people, but you must be prepared to wait 5 minutes after each swipe.

Take the E to Queens Plaza. Then exit the subway and walk 2 blocks along Queens Plaza South (where the Queensboro/59th Street Bridge runs) to 28th Street. The Q100 bus stops at 28th Street and Queens Plaza South, and travels over the Rikers Island Bridge to the Rikers Island Visitors Center.

Travelling on the Indian Pacific train from Perth to Sydney is a three-day, three-night journey. The train leaves mid-late afternoon and arrives at its destination around 8-9am of the third day.

You have two options available to you as of August 2014. You can take Amtrak's Southwest Chief for $66 one-way at a Value rate for 7 hours and 32 minutes. It heads directly to Chicago from KC.

The other option is cheaper at $57 for one way, but goes through St. Louis on Amtrak's Missouri RIver Runner and Lincoln Service. It'll take at minimum 11 hours and 20 minutes and part of the journey between Springfield and Chicago is taken by bus due to track work. This construction should be finished in November 2014.

From time to time, New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority has claimed that the Lexington Avenue line in Manhattan, where 4, 5 and 6 IRT division trains run on parallel tracks from their starting points in various parts of Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn is "the busiest subway line in the world".

The only direct reference to this claim that I could find in a search was an article in the New York Times about the fatal train derailment in August, 1991 near the 14th. Street Union Square station that closed the line in Manhattan for 6 days. A link to the article is posted below. It says that, at the time of the accident, the Lexington Avenue Line was moving 500,000 passengers every workday. You may have to "join" the NYT website to read it, but it's free.

But I have also read that transit officials in Tokyo claim that city's Toei Mita line carries the most passengers in the world.

In a word, no. Ironically, Scranton has not had rail service in about 40 years despite its Electric City and Steamtown railroad history! The New Jersey Transit proposal to restore passenger rail service between Scranton, PA and New York City via the Lackawanna Cut-Off was approved by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) in 2008. If this track is ever restored in the next decade or so, you could go from Philadelphia to Scranton via New Jersey.

The shortest distance between Staten Island and Bayonne is approximately 1,222 feet (372.5 meters), which is the width of the narrowest point of the waterway called Kill Van Kull, which separates them.

The driving distance between San Diego, CA and San Francisco, CA is approximately 500 miles. The driving time would be approximately 8 hours 15 minutes if you were to travel non-stop in good driving conditions. (The driving time does not take into consideration conditions which may extend trip time such as weather, road work and rush hour traffic in urban areas.)

I rode this train about 27 years ago. I believe it was about 11 1/2 hrs. long ride. If using Amtrak, there is a bus/train combo, though the bus portion is negligible as it is extremely short, about 15 mins. The train ride is listed as 9 hours 7 minutes on the Amtrak schedule, which would make the total trip around 9 hours, 30 minutes. You can see the link before for more details.
