How long can you leave a raw turkey out of the refrigerator?

You shouldn't really as food is in the danger zone where bacteria can reproduce at a much faster rate. This means its more likely you'll get food poisoning.
Asked in Halal and Haram, Turkey Meat

Is turkey meat halal in according to Islam?

User Avatar
Yes it's jaiz and is halal after islamic slaughter; Some brothers and sister's sometimes need the 10 points which are following InshAllah in future you can determone yourself what is permissable to consume and what is not; 1) Animals that have been clearly and explicitly prohibited in the Qur'an or Sunnah are without doubt Haram, such as a swine, donkey, etc. 2) Animals that are born and live in water are all Haram with the exception of fish. All types of fishes are Halal, with the exception of that which dies naturally in the sea without any external cause. However, if a fish was to die due to some external cause such as cold, heat, being thrown to the shore by the water, colliding with a stone, etc, then it would be Halal. 3) The third principle is that, amongst the land-animals, those that have no blood in them are considered Haram, such as a hornet, fly, spider, beetle, scorpion, ant, etc 4) The forth principle is that those land-animals who have blood in them but the blood does not flow, in other words animals that do not have flowing blood, are also considered Haram, such as a snake, lizard, chameleon, etc. 5) The fifth principle is that all types of pests (hasharat al-Ardh) are also considered Haram, such as a mouse, hedgehog, jerboa, etc. 6) The sixth principle is, land-animals who have flowing blood in them and they survive on grass and leaves, and do not prey on other animals (i.e. non-predatory terrestrial animals) are all considered Halal, such as a camel, cow, goat, buffalo, sheep, deer, etc, although there is a slight difference of opinion within the Hanafi School with regards to the consumption of horse-meat, as will be discussed later. Also, a donkey is exempted from this general ruling, in that its meat in considered Haram for consumption. 7) The seventh principle is that all terrestrial predatory animals and beasts, i.e. animals that hunt with their teeth, are considered Haram, such as a lion, cheetah, tiger, leopard, wolf, fox, dog, cat, etc. 8) The eighth principle is that all birds of prey, i.e. those that hunt with their claws/talons, are considered Haram, such as a falcon, eagle, kite, hawk, bat, crow etc. 9) The ninth principle is that birds who do not hunt with their claws and do not prey on other animals, rather they merely eat grains and crop, are all considered Halal, such as a chicken, duck, pigeon, dove, sparrow, turkey, etc. 10) The tenth principle is that if a Halal animal only consumes impure things to the extent that it creates bad odour in its meat and milk, then it will be Makruh to consume its meat and drink its milk. However, if it consumes other things along with the impure, or if it does not create bad smell in its meat and milk, then the meat and milk will be totally Halal. (Radd al-Muhtar, 6/340)

Can you deep fry a precooked turkey without drying it out?

User Avatar
I would not deep fry a cooked turkey. It might be very dry. Deep frying anything is not a healthy way to prepare food but folks seem to like it anyway

They have light and dark meat because the parts of the animal turkey are different every inch of its body, so when it is cooked the turkey food has different colors.

Can turkey stuffing be prepared the day before?

User Avatar
Yes. I always prepare mine the night before. First I sautee the onions and celery until translucent. Then add the mixture to the dry stuffing and add 1 egg and 2-3 jars of heated chicken broth, and any other seasoning I want. Mix it all together until you get the consistency you want and then cover and refridgerate overnight. Letting it sit overnight will intensify all flavors and allow the stuffing to absorb all that extra flavor so it doesnt taste like a cereal box.

How long does it take to defrost a turkey outside the refrigerator?

User Avatar
room temperature is 22 degrees so if you do not want to cook it first to help defrost it, after its out of the freezer it should take around 4-5 hours depending on what temperature your room is, if you are trying to make the process quicker never run it under hot water as help bacteria spread! I hope this has been useful xxx

How long do you cook turkey stuffing?

User Avatar
Cook it in the oven till it reaches an internal temperature of no less than 180 degrees. When cooking stuffing/dressing (but only use this when cooking it inside of a turkey) you should always put it in a cloth bag and THEN put it inside of the turkey. Although many people have made stuffing without using a cloth bag to put it in for many years, this is simply just a precaution for your health. The suggestion of using a food safe cloth bag to cook the stuffing is new to many of us. The idea behind it is the turkey will be finished cooking before the stuffing, the bird will then over cook while allowing the stuffing to finish cooking in the bird. If the stuffing is bagged, the bag can be removed and the stuffing returned to the oven to finish cooking at the time the turkey is removed. Because bacteria can survive in stuffing that has not reached 165 °F, possibly resulting in food-borne illness. (according to the USDA Food Safety Service) When stuffing a turkey, it's essential to use a food thermometer to make sure the center of the stuffing reaches a safe minimum internal temperature of 165 °F. They also recommend not to over stuff the bird as this will cause the center to remain under cooked.

At what temperature do you cook a twenty lb turkey?

User Avatar
Set oven to 350. Roast breast down for 45 minutes, then turn breast up. Cook until the temperature in the thickest portion of the breast is 150 degrees F and the thigh is 160. After you remove it, let it rest 30-60 minutes and the temp will rise 10 or so degrees. It will probably take around 20 to 30 minutes per pound but that changes with the temperature it was when you start and whether it's trussed and other factors. Checking temperature is much better. Time and oven temperature is very unreliable. A meat thermometer is $10 and well worth it.

Do you cover turkey the turkey when you cook it?

User Avatar
Generally no, I don't cover the turkey when I cook it. There is a cooking technique that involves covering the breasts for a certain amount of time to keep them from overcooking while you wait for the dark meat to fully cook, but I don't do that. Dark, crisp skin on the turkey is a priority for most people. Instead, I like to butterfly the turkey, removing the backbone, then boning the breasts (essentially you are removing the entire ribcage), and laying the turkey out flat in the pan, with the breasts on the inside and the legs on the outside. It cooks a lot faster, a LOT faster, you cut hours down on the cooking time, it cooks more evenly, you don't have to cover the white meat, its easier to handle and store, its just much more convenient.

You may want to consider used snow removal equipment, if you are seeking inexpensive. A large pawn shop in your area will more than likely have these items. If not, you can check with Lowes, Walmart and/or Home Depot in their equipment department.

Can you cook your turkey overnight at 200 degrees?

User Avatar
According to the USDA there are many methods of cooking a turkey but in the oven it is not recommended to cook any turkey at a temp below 325degrees F. It seems strange that my mother used to put the "bird in the oven" the night before and let it cook all night long. Nobody died. This is progress. I have been cooking my turkey stuffed overnight for over 40 years. I buy a frozen turkey and thaw it in the refrigerator 3 days before cooking. I rinse it with water before stuffing and pat it dry with paper towels. For the dressing I cut stale white bread into cubes 1 1/2 loaves for a 20 lb turkey. I take the turkey liver and saute it with 1 pkg. jimmy dean sage sausage. I add it to the bread. I cut up one bunch fresh parsley and add it to the bread. I take 3 sticks of butter, 3 cups chopped celery and 1- 1/2-2 cups chopped onion saute together until veg's are soft. add salt and one whole jar spice island poultry seasoning. let cool and spoon mixture into bread mixing up each spoonful. Stuff turkey cavity and neck tight. secure neck flap with skewer. place an apple in rear to keep in stuffing. oil bird (I like butterball or any young turkey)season with poulty seasoning salt and pepper. place in double disposable aluminum pan. add 2 cups of water cover with heavy duty aluminum foil tented up off top of turkey breast. put in oven at 11:30-12 midnight at 175 degrees. remove foil at 6:30 am turn off oven. remove 30 minutes later. remove turkey from pan. scoop out dressing from both ends and put in warm oven until ready to eat. We eat at 4:00 pm.

Can you cook a frozen turkey?

User Avatar
It is a common myth that turkey can not be cooked safely from the frozen state In fact, it is perfectly safe if proper procedure is followed. A HACCP based procedure for cooking turkey from the frozen state is outlined by Dr. Snyder, a food safety expert, at the following address: http://www.hi-tm.com/Documents2005/turkey-cook-frozen.pdf The Mayo Clinic is another source of information which can be found at: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/thanksgiving-turkey/AN01483 An added bonus is that the risk of microbial cross contamination is lowered as juices are not dripping and contaminating surfaces. Please note however that cooking time increases by 50-60%.
