The term "gothic" for the typeface is a misnomer, as it does not have direct ties to the Gothic architecture or art style. What is the large letter at the beginning of each chapter in a book called?

The letters at the beginning which are larger than the others? They're called an Initial. From Latin; initialis, "the start". They are just larger letters, sometimes they put drawing inside them.

This is completely wrong, and was totally unhelpful. I don't know if this is the official "Name" of the large capital letter that begins chapters, but in WORD it's called a Dropped Capital. or Dropcap. Word will automatically insert a drop cap into your paragraph if you click the insert tab, and under the text group pick Drop Cap.

Who can identify a typeface or font style for you?

The best way is to try a website that helps you identify the font type. You can try inputting a sample and see what answer comes up. See the links I have provided for you. If you have to do it manually, first determine whether it is serif or sans serif, and script, block, etc. Take note of the ascenders and descenders of letters like b, d, q, p, etc. Look and see if any characters appear more decorative than others. Also take note of the appearance of the lowercase a. Then go to a website that has samples of all these fonts and sort through the list accordingly - serif or sans serif, etc. Or use your computer's font library. It really helps if you are familiar with the popular fonts to notice the differences, otherwise this route will take you a really long time to compare each one.

See the Related Links for "how to identify a font type" to the left for the answer.

What is the Carolingian Miniscule?

Carolingian (or Caroline) miniscule was a script developed during the time of Charlemagne. From the 8th to the 12th century, it was used to produce classical texts, religious books and educational material. Seeking to come up with a unified script that would make the Roman alphabet more accessible to the literate, the developers formed the letters more clearly, using a style based on uncial scripts. Carolingian miniscule brought with it the use of capital letters and the tradition of separating words with a space. It is considered the basis of modern typefaces. It was created by Alcuin of York.

_____________________

Good answer -- with two exceptions: the term is correctly Carolignian minuscule. The now common misspelling, miniscule, did not arrive until the 17th century, long after the era of the Carolignian minuscule.

You've also misspelled Carolignianas Carolingian. Even Wikipedia gets this wrong!

The adjective Carolignian derives from Charlemagne. Carolignian majuscules and minuscules were devised by the teacher-monk Alcuin in the late 8th century CE, the era of the emperor Charlemagne.
