Valley Forge

Baron Friedrich von Steuben was put in charge of training the raw troops at Valley Forge. He had introduced himself as a General officer in Prussia and volunteered to work without pay at training the soldiers. Later it was found out that he never made it higher than Captain; but he had done such a good job at training the soldiers and making them into an army that Washington made him a General in spite of his lower ranking.

First ground troops were sent to Vietnam in 1965.

Red Coats were the soldiers sent by the British king to control the colonists, who used this term for them because their coats were red. It was the Red Coats that the Americans fought against in the Revolutionary War.

That varied depending on the contingencies of war. Most often they made winter quarters in Moristown, New Jersey. Most famously, in the winter fo 1777-1778 they camped in Valley forge Pannsylvania.

Valley forge was considered a low point in the American Revolution for a few reasons. First of all General George Washington's Continental army suffered a number of losses the previous summer thus low on munitions and supplies. as well as that, the living conditions were harsh because of the cold winter, some men didn't even have shoes.

Washington's gamble pays off and the death rate falls from the thousands.

Valley Forge is surrounded in myth. We are told a story that the soldiers were freezing to death and nearly starved. That this was the worse winter in the Revolution and that men were so naked that they left bloody footprints in the snow. This is an exaggeration. Studies by the National Park Service and a team of archaeologist in the 1970's show that no one starved or froze. The researchers found that in December, January, and February that the 10,000 man army was supplied each month with a million pounds of flour and a million pounds of meat and fish. Broken down this means that each soldier was given more than 3 pounds of flour and more than 3 pounds of fish or meat per day. It seems that Washington overplayed the problems at the camp to obtain more aid from Congress and to fend off criticism that the army should spend the winter on the march. Washington was a shrewd man.
