Why should you be thankful for veterans?
One of the reasons why it is important to be thankful for veterans is that these people are willing to put their lives on the line. They go to war zones and are willing to face danger and death. They have no intention to gain any fame. They do it so that the country people get peace and live with peace. Joining the military is a voluntary act and cant be forced on anyone. Also, these soldiers leave behind all wealth, family and friends and go to sacrifice their lives. Sometimes you never get to hear from them and they never get an opportunity to see their family. Yet they make this sacrifice. So it is important that the people of the country honor their veterans.
What year was the first Veterans Day celebrated?
Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day because the armistice ending the hostilities of World War I took effect at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of the year 1918 French time. (This date was not the official end of WWI as many people think. That happened on June 28, 1919 with the signing of the Treaty of Versialles.) Armistice Day was first observed on November 11, 1919, one year later! In 1954 the holiday was renamed as Veterans Day.

Are Korean war veterans considered combat veterans?
The US VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) was established in 1899 by US Veterans of the Spanish-American War of 1898. The Spanish-American War of 1898 was the FIRST US war fought on foreign soil. Previous US wars had been fought on the North American Continent. The VFW is our "Oldest" existing Veterans Organization. GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) was our oldest veteran group, but died out when the last US Civil War Veteran died in the 20th Century. Korea is a foreign country. Therefore, it was a foreign war. US veterans of the Korean War can join the VFW. The last DECLARED WAR by the United States of America, WAS WORLD WAR TWO. The dawn of the ATOMIC AGE in August of 1945 has resulted in NO MORE DECLARED WARS; As a rule, declared wars USED to be total wars, and total wars can NO LONGER BE FOUGHT without risking "mutually assured destruction" by the use of nuclear weapons. Therefore, atomic age wars fought during the "Cold War" had to be fought as "Limited Wars" CONVENTIONAL weapons only; no nuclear weapons.
First of all is this a trick question or are you seriously not aware of vocabulary? A veteren is a surviver of a war and they drink in VFWs all over the country on Saturday afternoons . However the unfortunate who do give their lives probally wouldn't do so if they had a choice. Most deaths the victim doesn't even know they have been fatally wounded( an old Army saying is "you never hear the bullet that kills you")Others volunteer for a dangerous mission knowing they may not come out of it alive, these are called Heros. Every person who served and saw action in my opinion is a hero.

What did medieval holidays not honor?
There were no holidays in the medieval period - there were Holy days, which is not the same thing. Holy days were important events in the Church calendar, including Easter, Christmas, Epiphany and Lent; but also the feast days of all the Christian Saints (and there were many).
A feast was definitely nothing to do with sitting at a table and eating (that's a banquet). A feast was a Holy day to commemorate and honour a particular Saint or other Holy figure (such as the Virgin Mary) by attending church services, being informed by the priest about the life of that person and having their story in mind all day. Certain foods, such as fish, were eaten on certain feast days but otherwise life continued as normal.
Perhaps the only Christian saint vaguely remembered by everyone today, including non-Christians, is Saint Valentine, whose feast day falls on 14 February - but sadly almost nobody has the faintest clue why he became a Saint or why we honour his memory.

Are thailand veteran's considered veitnam veterans?
This will probably annoy many "Boots On Ground" advocates, however I believe Thailand Veterans are "Vietnam Veterans". During the Vietnam war our bases in Thailand were attacked five times by Vietnam Sappers. Also tactical herbicides was used on the perimeters of every base in Thailand. Our Thailand Veterans, loaded weapons on the planes to fulfill the missions in Vietnam and protect the "Boots On Ground" troops. Air Force Personnel volunteered to man secret radar sites in Laos to guide bomb strikes, etc. in Vietnam and many lost their lives when those sites were over run. Some want to call Thai Veterans "Vietnam Era Veterans" the same designation someone that served in Germany during the war might be called. I honor those that did serve in Germany and all other areas during the Vietnam War but to refer to those who served in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia as anything other than Vietnam Veterans is an insult to the service they performed in the defense of bases in Thailand and the support of the troops on the ground in Vietnam. I believe those that died in Laos and in at least one bunker explosion at a Thai base are listed on the wall. We shared the same experience as other Vietnam Vets on our return in 69 and 70 from the public, we share the same health issues from Agent Orange as our brothers who served in-country. Air Force Security Police, Thailand 69-70.

After the war in Vietnam how did the people in the US react when Vietnamese came to live in the US?
There was a lot of initial resentment against Vietnamese refugees settling in the U.S., because few spoke English and their culture was so different from ours. In some areas, these immigrants have melded with the local populace and in other areas they continue to maintaim enclaves of their own culture. Many Vietnamese have thrived in the bayou areas and low country of Louisiana because the climate, soil and natural resources are so similar to their home country and they've been able to establish successful farms.

Veterans Day marks the end of the First World War. In other countries, they have similar holidays (Armistice Day, Remembrance Day etc). The major hostilities of the war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, when Germany signed the Armistice.
Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day, and was proclaimed by U.S. President Woodrow Wilson on November 11th, 1919. In his proclamation, he stated:
"To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."
It became a legal holiday, however, on May 13th, 1938. On this day, a Congressional Act (52 Stat. 351; 5 U.S. Code, Sec. 87a) made the 11th November of each year "a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day'."
It became renamed as Veterans Day on June 1st, 1954. On this day, Congress amended a prior act to replace 'Armistice' with 'Veterans', and has stayed that way since.

What were the advantages of the Vietnam war for the US military wise?
Weapons: Tanks, Jets, Ships, Guns (Artillery), Rifles, Machine guns, Shells, Bombs, Mines, and an assortment of other war equipment had built designed, built, and fielded in the US military from 1945 up through the end of the 20th Century. Only twice were these materials allowed the opportunity to be combat tested by US military forces...with the one exception of Operation Desert Storm in Jan & Feb 1991; which combat tested the F-117 aircraft, M1 tank, Bradley IFV, and Apache/Blackhawk helicopters, and some other related materials. Desert Storm ONLY allowed testing for LESS THAN 100 HOURS. The above described equipment were validated on the battlefield; but again not during extended combat, such as Germany's armored columns advancing into Russia in 1941. Or the US M4 medium tank enduring battle for over 3 years. Or the US M48 Patton tank enduring battle from 1965 until 1975 in Vietnam. Good information came out of those 100 HOURS of battle; but many more things were NOT learned. Vietnam allowed the testing and validation in combat, of the Strategic Air Command's high altitude B-52 Stratofortress bomber; super-sonic jet intercepter's in aerial duels (dog-fights) with adversary super-sonic jets in aerial combat: F-100 Supersabres, F-101 Voodoos, F-102 Delta Daggers, F-104 Starfighters, F-105 Thunderchiefs (the only Air Force single engine bomber that could carry a nuke completely concealed within it's fuselage), A-1 Skyraiders, A-4 Skyhawks, A-6 Intruders, A-7 Corsairs, F-4 Phantoms, and F-8 Crusaders. High altitude spy planes such as the U-2 and SR-71 Blackbird were used & validated in combat. Today's 21st century Rapter is the offspring from lessons learned in Vietnam, especially by the nation's last ACES of the 20th century, the F-4 Phantom II. The M-1 Abrams MBT is named after GEN Creighton Abrams, the last US Commander in Vietnam. Today's 21st century body armor has been developed thru the study of bullet and shrapnel pierced steel helmets from Korea and Vietnam, as well as the old "flak vests" from that time period. The use of the .50 BMG sniper rifle was developed from experience documented by Vietnam snipers, such as USMC Gunnery Sgt. Carlos Hathcock. Vietnam gave the US Army, US Marine Corps, US Air Force, and US Navy OVER ten years to develope, test, and improve upon military hardware...from rifles to jets; from metal 1 quart canteens to 1 & 2 quart plastic canteens...from canned "C" rations to today's "modern" light weight military rations.
How many veterans from all wars are there?
There is a US veteran's website that shows the current ages/populations of specific generations of war vets. To date, the last Spanish-American War vet has probably departed. WW1 vets, are probably in the hundreds.
Can a person be a Veteran and still be active duty?
There is actually a code (or at least during the Viet War there was) that designates VETERAN status. And that code cannot (or could not) be awarded until completion of military duty which satisifed that code's requirement.
Therefore; if a veteran (an honorably discharged serviceman) re-enlisted into the US military...he would be a former veteran on active duty.
Example letters to a war Veteran?
If this question is in regards to today's 21st century military personnel, recent information indicates military personnel...DON"T use conventional paper anymore...they USE COMPUTERS (and TEXTING on their cell phones). Or lap-tops.
