Viruses (biological)

A virus is a small infectious agent that can replicate only inside the living cells of organisms. Viruses display a wide diversity of shapes and sizes, called morphologies. Generally viruses are much smaller than bacteria. Most viruses that have been studied have a diameter between 10 and 300 nanometres.

Does ourworld have a virus?

ourWorld does not have a virus, it is a flash game (like if you go to www.addictinggames.com), and it is impossible for a virus to linger on a flash application.

How long does rabies vaccine last in humans?

There are a number of reputable sources online that state that immunity lasts at least 2 years. Some sources say 2-3 years but that titers should be checked after two years. Emergency room physicians that gave me a rabies vaccination series a few months ago after a cat bite said that immunity lasts one year. But the consensus online seems to be two years unless one is at frequent risk in which case their titers should be checked regularly.

Several sources say a two shot series should follow an exposure if the person had been previously vaccinated, but they don't indicate if that is only in the case of a 2-3 year gap in initial vaccination.

Is avian bird flue lytic?

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, can exhibit lytic properties, particularly in certain strains. Lytic infections involve the destruction of host cells, typically leading to the release of new viral particles. In the case of avian influenza, the virus can cause significant cell damage in infected birds, resulting in symptoms and high mortality rates in some strains. However, the pathogenicity and lytic nature can vary depending on the specific virus subtype.

Will the flu shot prevent the norovirus?

No. The influenza vaccine is only for preventing respiratory influenza (flu).

The norovirus ("Norwalk Flu") is one of the viruses that cause the "stomach flu", more correctly called viral gastroenteritis, since it is actually not the flu. There is no available vaccine yet, but one is in clinical trials, so it could be licensed for use in the US in a relatively short time.

Do viruses have a metabolism?

''Viruses do not have their own metabolism, and require a host cell to make new products.''

Can you carry the flu if you get the flu shot?

No. The flu shot contains either weakened or dead virus particles that can not make you sick or contagious. They act to trigger your immune system to make the right cells to destroy that type of virus. The immune system is "tricked" into doing it, it doesn't do it because you are actually sick.

What is an icosahedral?

Multifaceted with triangle shaped faces

Why is a virus not consired a living cell?

because it does not have all the characteristics of life. yes it may have nucleic acids giving it the ability to reproduce but that is it. it does not have movement, excretion, respiration, nutrition, and growth.

If the cold doesn't cause a cold then what really causes a cold?

Viruses cause the common cold, usually the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronavirus (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold.

The idea that cold weather causes colds is a long held traditional concept from back before it was known that viruses existed or that they were the cause of the common cold. See the related question below for more information about why the cold and flu have a season that is during the cold weather in most places.

Are the terms narrow host range and broad host range used to describe effects at the bacterial family genus species or strain level?

This means that a bacteria may affect one or a few species such as humans and other primates making this a narrow host range. Or the bacteria could affect all mammals and affect a broad host range. Using family, genus, species or strain could cover both narrow or broad host range. Most of the time, it is at the species level.

Does Ebola come from dirty water?

No. It comes from someone who has the disease and has it in their body fluids (blood, sexual fluids and even sweat).

When and how did humans begin to discover how to control bacteria and viruses?

It was not so long ago that people realized that microbes even existed. Anton van Leeuwenhoek was the first person to see bacteria during the 1660s. He had ground magnifying lenses and was interested that he could see small microbes. For almost two centuries, the knowledge was regarded as an interesting but rather irrelevant fact.

The germ theory of disease was not really fully developed until the 1870s but, 30 years before this, a doctor in Vienna called Ignaz Semmelweis noted a disease called child-bed fever was passed from one mother to another by doctors not washing their hands.

Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch in the 1860s and 1870s finalized the Germ Theory of Disease. Both realized that boiling broth and covering it tightly kept out spoiling microbes.

You have to see that this was only about 140 years ago. Antibiotics were only available since the 1940's (Penicillin).

As for viruses, they were first discovered later as they are so small. Beijerinck investigated the cause of tobacco mosaic virus in the late 1800's but he could not see them but did prove something smaller than a bacteria caused this TMV.

Is measles a virus or bacteria?

Measles is an infection of the respiratory system caused by a virus. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a generalized, maculopapular, erythematous rash. Measles is spread through respiration (contact with fluids from an infected person's nose and mouth, either directly or through aerosol transmission), and is highly contagious.

Do fungi cause bird flu?

No. Bird flu is aka Avian Influenza and is caused by influenza viruses not fungi.

Are germ cells formed during mitosis or meiosis?

Answer 1

It is unclear what a "germ cell" is as this is not a biological term.

As the Expert Judy Olmsted notes, if "germ cell" refers to gametes, i.e. cells that will be used in sexual reproduction, then meiosis is the process used to create them.

If you are asking how bacteria and protists that cause diseases replicate, this depends on the species. Almost all bacteria and a significant majority of protists replicate by mitosis. The remainder replicate through sexual conjugation. There are also some species that replicate both ways, each under a different set of conditions.

If you are asking how viruses that cause diseases replicate, this is through the invasion of the nucleus of the host cell and inserting genetic information so that the cells own production apparatus (usually ribosomes and similar) creates new viruses.

Answer 2

Germ cells are formed during meiosis. This term is in use for sexually reproducing organisms. Therefore, there is no doubt that the germ cells are produced during meiosis.
