Is it safe to take a prenatal multi vitamin?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Well I guess technically that is up to you, so you can, but there is no reason too.(that is if by "regular vitamins" you mean a regular multivitamin) You end up taking more vitamins than you liver can process and could end up being a strain on your system. Other supplements may be fine if approved by your doctor i.e. fish oil supplements, vitamin c etc. in conjunction with your prenatal. Always consult your physician

Too much Vitamin A has been seen to cause birth defects and liver toxicity. Vitamin A in the form of Beta-Carotene (carotenoids) is okay, and actually necessary for proper fetus development and post-birth tissue repair. But avoid it in the preformed or retinol form (retinoids). Carotenoids are going to be found in fruit and vegetables, where retinoids are found in animal products (dairy, eggs, meat and liver).

User Avatar

One is not supposed to take these vitamins while breastfeeding because some of them are made with too much vitamin b and e, which in large doses can be bad and we really don't know how they affect the milk. And also horsetail can be bad as well. All you need is a regular prenatal vitamin and a healthy diet. Wait until after nursing then start taking this vitamin.

What is the importance of folic acid during pregnancy?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Folic acid is very important during pregnancy...possibly the most important nutrient you will need during pregnancy. According to womenshealthcaretopics.com, Folic acid is a form of the B vitamin that aids in the regular cellular development and regeneration, and is especially crucial within the first weeks of your unborn baby's development. It helps to insure proper formation of the brain and spinal cord, without which there is a higher chance of miscarriage, and a 1 in 1000 chance that the child will end up with a Neural Tube Disorder (NTD). You should try to begin a regular folic acid regimen before becoming pregnant if possible. You can purchase folic acid supplements at your local drugstore or pharmacy. Your doctor can also provide you with a prenatal vitamin which is a multivitamin + folic acid. Folate can also be found in liver (chicken, turkey, lamb, etc), peas, beans, lentils, vegetables including spinach, broccoli, greens, avocado, orange, orange juice, asparagus and papaya, some breakfast cereals, wheat germ, some pastas, bread, rice egg, and corn.
