I have worked on many engines, I would guess broken valve. Check every cylinder with a pressure gauge. If zero broken valve, if all have good pressure, timing. If timing good, fuel. maybe flooding.

There are two alternators for Volkswagen Beetles: the Bosch AL82X, and the Motorola abomination they threw on there for a while when Bosch couldn't make enough AL82X to meet VW's needs. They're the same size, so if you've got a 74 SB and a 73 alternator, go ahead and install it Since the sheetmetal is the same between the two, you're fine. (If you were moving an alternator from a 72 to a 74, you'd have to switch the backing plates because VW changed the fan shroud that year, and the backing plates are different.)

You can't do it, unless you want to pull the engine and split the case. The puller is the only way to grab the drive pinion.

As a straight swap, No. Every few years VW changed the seat mounts let alone different models. But as far as retro fitting them, people do it all the time. People have put seats from Hondas, Toyotas, etc. in classic bugs. It's just a matter of making your own mounts. Just measure the width and height to make sure they will fit.

I have an 2004 New Beetle turbo (not a convertible). It does really great in the snow EXCEPT when the snow is higher than the bumper, it does fine going straight but when you try and turn (say, pulling into your driveway) it has problems. Other than that mine has done well. Thinking about investing in some snow tires this year though.
The engine needs fuel, compression and spark to run, you are missing one of those.

What would cause a 1979 VW Beetle to backfire?
There are two things that can cause it. The most likely one is timing too retarded. The other is an exhaust leak. Since your car is fuel injected, you probably have the Exhaust Gas Recirculation system hooked up, and this is where most of the backfire-causing exhaust leaks come from. So it's probably timing.
