Recuva is a great tool that supports every type of Windows-installations down to Windows 98 and up to today. Windows files are actually not deleted when you delete them, only marked as deleted and then stored on the drive until another file needs to use its space. This way a file can be recovered even years after deletion if the harddrive isn't often used, but can also be lost in seconds if it's heavily used.

I am going to assume you meant Windows ME to WIndows XP Home ED? One thing I HIGHLY suggest doing is perform a low level format because if you try and upgrade from Windows ME to Windows XP you are going to have some serious .dll issues and all kinds of errors. Windows ME was not a stable OS and Microsoft admitted to that, this is why people choose not to run Windows ME. Research the web if you do not know how to perform a low level format on your hard drive

If you have two windows open, then to activate the inactive window you have to click on the colored strip, mine is blue, at the very top of the window. Don't know if that is what you meant. :)

The Microsoft website should have that in the downloads page. Usually, windows updater will automatically download and ask you to install it. Go to update.microsoft.com to make sure you have Windows Updater and to look foor it in the updates section. ~dandre

If it only makes noise when the led for the drive is on then it is probably the hard drive.

They aren't examples of the same operating system. Unix is a classification of operating system; Solaris is an example of Unix. But Windows 2000 is a version of Windows, and not related at all to the other two.
