No. You can't connect two modems to one phone line. Your modem is given an IP address from your ISP. This IP number cannot be shared between two modems.

You can however have two phone lines - with two modems - with two accounts from your ISP - plugged into two network cards in one computer.

The best answer to this is to have a router with two dsl connections often called Dual Wan. There are several issues that will arise having dual wan, but most can be overcome (SMTP outbound for example) with work arounds.

What's needed:

#1) A lot of money: dual WAN routers are NOT cheap!

#2) Two ISP accounts: (again more money - monthly payment) You'll need two IP addresses from your ISP.

If you use two different ISPs this can be a good thing for you if you want to keep almost 100% uptime.

Don't know 'why' but I solved my hot modem and hot router problem. Bought a cheap laptop pad (with the fans) at Big Lots ($8), plugged it into my router, set modem and router on it. They don't get hot anymore.

Regular telephone conversations use the lower section of the lines frequency range. depending on the company, voice is carried between 25hz and 3500hz. The DSL signal is carried from 10000hz to approx 3.5mhz, the 10000hz part is in the audible range, so without a filter you will hear a hiss or static on the telephone when you try to use it. Not only is this annoying but it interferes with the signal and will make your DSL go slower. Filters are very important.
