The bed of a lathe is the central beam that runs down the machine. The head, which holds and turns the workpiece, is fixed at one end, there is a tailstock at the other end which can be adjusted along the bed, and usually a carraige in between, which holds turning tools. The workpiece that can be turned in the lathe is limited to what will fit in the head without hitting the bed. A gap bed lathe has a gap in the bed near the head, so a larger workpiece can be turned.

Depends what would you use. Certain would is not bendable and might brake if you tried bending it. You need medium or smallish twigs or sticks to be able to bend them.

The health and safety requirements and safe working practices and procedures requiered for the hand fitting activited undertaken are; you must ensure you wear the correct PPE such as correctly fitting overalls and safety boots and if using any machinery you should always wer saftey goggles, you must also make sure you mount, atatch and use all tools correctly and you need to check they are not damaged or faulty if they are faulty you must reprt it to an instructor and you need to keep your work area clean and tidy at all times retaining tools and equipment back to the correct location.

In excellent condition with lots of 'tooling' like chucks, rests, attachments, extra parts, etc. a nice clean Wards lathe might be worth $1000 or more.

A rusty, dirty, neglected or abused old example with no extras and in poor condition?

Maybe a hundred bucks......maybe less.

For this reason, a number of automobile makers had hexagonal trademarks such as Essex and Packard- a mark of homage to the machines used to make the parts!- the Turret Lathe.
