Nobody 'invented' the first airplane - they were developed after much trial and many errors in the USA, France, Britain and other countries all through the late 1890's. MANY inventors across the world invented and flew short flights in aircraft before the Wright brothers.

The Wright Brothers with their invention of the airplane impacted life in a great way. First of all they made the world a smaller place. Before the airplane many places appeared to be far and were hard to get to. With the airplane, going to any location is easier and faster.

The Wright Brothers tested their flying machines at Kitty Hawk.

Kitty Hawk was made famous on December 17, 1903, when the Wright brothers made the first controlled, powered airplane flights four miles away near the sand dunes known as the Kill Devil Hills.

The brothers really liked this idea and kept thinking about it.When building airplanes, the brothers knew the plane had three requirements to meet. It would need wings to lift it in the air, power to propel it, and a way to control it. The Wrights had the most difficult time figuring out how to control the plane. Airplanes affected American society in many ways. It affected American society because if we didn't have to solely rely on cars or or trains then their would be other ways to travel. Airplanes make it possible to go far distances and travel in other states and regions. Airplanes also affected America for warfare. When America discovered the potential planes could have, they went right to working on their own warplanes.
They made it much easier to get to remote places and faster to get across the country.

They used spruce for the frame and covered it with muslin. The engine and many other parts were metal.

Many aircraft were created, flown short distances and crashed during the late 1890's and early 1900's.

The Wright brothers were the first to achieve controlled powered flight. Gliders, man-made wings, and balloons were around long before the flight of the Wright Brothers flying machine, the Flyer I, on December 17, 1903, at Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk NC.

Well in truth the Wright Brothers interest started with kites in 1899, and by 1901 they had their first model of the Wright Flyer but it wasn't until two years and two more Flyers later that they achieved the Famous First Flight on December 17, 1903

They flew their plane at kitty hawk because the land there was flat and they thought that it would be perfect to fly and land there
Other reasons are: 1. There were sand dunes there so they had a better chance of survival in the event of a crash - softer landings; 2. No trees in the general area to crash into; and 3. They needed a location with a steady wind.

They were mechanically inclined anyway, and ran a bicycle factory and were fascinated with flight since childhood when their father gave them a flying model. They could see flight was going to be a big thing and worked hard to get in on it.

There is some dispute over who actually made the first flight. The world's first powered flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft is credited to the Wright brothers in Ohio, USA, on 17 December 1903. Their flight lasted 12 seconds, and continued for 120 feet. There are claims, however, that the world's first such flight was undertaken by twenty-five year old New Zealander, Richard Pearse, on 31 March 1902 (some sources quote 1903). Pearse's initial flight was an estimated distance of 300m and ended when the flying machine landed in a hedge some 4 metres off the ground. As Pearse did not realise the historical value of his flight, he did not arrange for any photographs to be taken of his flight, and evidence that it occurred has only been provided through the reports of eye witnesses.

On December 17, 1903, Orville Wright piloted the first powered airplane 20 feet above a wind-swept beach in North Carolina. The flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 120 feet. Three more flights were made that day with Orville's brother Wilbur piloting the record flight lasting 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet.

The brothers began their experimentation in flight in 1896 at their bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio. They selected the beach at Kitty Hawk as their proving ground because of the constant wind that added lift to their craft. In 1902 they came to the beach with their glider and made more than 700 successful flights.
