That's a individual choice of the writer, and it depends on the type of novel. The First person focuses the narrative, it is usually one person's story. It's also more personal, it's easier to connect to the character.

The third person is more distant as the story does not take place directly inside a character. Having said that, if you're writing something that involves multiple story lines, third person would be more practical.
