If it has electric fans? If so, are they coming on? If the vehicle has a mechanical fan clutch instead, maybe it quit working. If all this is good then-
Start with the thermostat. After changing it, and it is still having an issue with overheating, then the radiator will be suspect as being clogged, and will need to be flushed. Depending on the age of your vehicle, it may be a good idea to go ahead and have this done. And the only thing left would be the water pump. It is very rare, but impellers have been known to erode away (metal) and plastic ones have disentigrated, or fallen off their hubs.
You should be able to get a wiring harness from a locally-owned or small business type car audio shop that also does install. Usually the small businesses have better access to get the "odd ball" parts than do Circuit City and Best Buy. If they can't order it, ask one of the guys in the install bay if they know a way to "engineer" something. You would be surprised what they could do!
This is most likely the Brake Warning Light. It's usually obvious because it says BRAKE under it but perhaps not always. This indicator light is usually located bottom center of the tachometer gauge.
I have a rover metro and have had problems with overheating for ages. first i thought it was loose pipes making me loose water but this wasnt the case. i thought it might be an idea to remove the thermostat to stop overheating but it had already been done so that wasnt it either. i thought maybe the fan wasnt kicking in so it wouldn't cool down the engine but there was also nothing wrong with that. in the end i decided it must be the head gasket. with a little help i took the engine apart and yes, it was the head gasket. i also needed a few other gaskets replacing along with a new water pump. im hoping the car will be finished by next week at which point it should run like new.
WARNING. this will be very expensive if you don't know the right people. probably better off buying a new car to be honest
Hi, the thermostat is located at the rear of the engine under the inlet manifold. There is a metal pipe which runs along the back of the engine and enters the main block on the left side. The pipe has two securing bolts, bolted to the engine block. follow this pipe towards the cambelt (left) this pipe leads to the thermostate housing. It is secured by three 8mil bolts. remove these also the two securing bolts and pull to the right the pipe will separate and the thermostat is located.
NOTE: you may find it easier to remove the inlet manifold out of the way (not remove) this saves you un-doing accelator linkage. plus it is easer to get to the pipe and thermostat housing.
