Time in a job is determined by the following: Size and experience of contractor (and this counts for MUCH!!) Simplicity or complexity of house plans Quality of Finish work (painted trim or natural wood? Built in Book shelves? Complicated banister? Ect.) Difficulty of Material Procurement (Syberia quartz counter-tops are harder to find than granite tile or butcher block) And Level of preplanning (getting the local ordinances, codes, legal contracts, paperwork, financial considerations, ect. figured out) You should always ask for a construction schedule before work commences and always expect the builder to ask for a pre-amount of grace period. For instance, I always ask for 30 days of grace period in my contract, plus time for changes and additions if they are made after foundation work. This as I understand it is average. Bid out the job. Time to build should always be included on a bid.
