Why did the North want to block Southern ports during the US Civil War?

The Northern political leadership, namely President Lincoln's Republican Party and the Democrat Party, had not favored the Southern secession. The "War Democrats" represented those people who sought to keep the US unified, even though they had little or no respect for the upstart Republicans that were less than a decade old. They were well aware that had the Democrat Party not split apart in 1860, it became a presidential race among four parties. The Democrats had basically split three ways giving the new Republicans an excellent chance to win the 1860 presidential elections. They were quite sure that had another Democrat, like the last US President, James Buchanan, had won the White House, the South would have never "revolted". Why President Buchanan did not run for a second term is not clear. With that said, the goal of the Republicans and Democrats of the North had to end the eleven state Southern rebellion. One way to win the 1861 armed conflict was to blockade Southern ports, and by economics, break the back of the rebellion. The South had become a plantation economy and its chief export, cotton, had made the entire US economy wealthy. The US had become by 1860, the largest source of cotton in the world. European nations, especially Great Britain depended on cotton to fuel their textile mills. And, the Northern textile mills were also cotton "customers".

Where can you find organic cotton onesies in bulk?

Hello!

I try and cloth my daughter in as much organic clothing as possible, but onsies for sleepware is the most important for us since they don't have any chemicals or fire retardants. Bulk is a general term. I always looked for at least 3-5 in a package and buy multiple packs when on sale. And since the best organics are generally really expensive I window shop a few sites and wait for sales.

The majority I bought was Gerber. They have organic onsies and sleepware that I found at Babies R Us, they aren't a bad deal when on sale. I also use the coupons they mail, and rewards for using their credit card.

Target offers Gerber white organic onsies in 3-5 packs. Again, watch for the sales and free shipping offers or free ship to store. They also offer other organics, but they're more expensive and only a 2 pack.

Walmart offers most its organics online, and ship to store for free.

I always check out eBay, sometimes you can get organics resale on the cheap.

I also watch Gap. I bought $14.99 long sleeve onsies for $4.99 each. They were all the same ones, but she sleeps in them and it actually made it more convienant since my husband knew which were undershirts and which were for sleeping. The last I checked, they had some cute ones again on sale for $4.99 in the clearance.

And a current sale that I just found. GREAT deals, like $3.25 a onsie...but they're too small for my girl now. Never bought here but here's the link. http://www.thelittlegreentree.com/index.HTML

And just to shout out a great place for the more unconvential. If your into organics and want some cute organic onsies - they're more clothing type and normally $20 a piece but soul-flower.com has some great earthy/hippie type onsies and clothes for babies. They have a sale page that we always watch too. Great store, excellent service. We've been long time customers. :)

I use wholesale organic baby clothing by Colored Organics. They have the highest quality onesies I have found, they are a US company ( which I love to support! ) and they have great styles and colors. I also really like that they have tagless onesies so I can sew my own label in the garment.

What is the history of the cotton chopper?

There is no "cotton chopper". There is a cotton picker and it was developed in the early 1900's. Before that cotton was hand picked. Cotton grows on a bush type plant that forms flowers that becomes cotton bolls. To pick the cotton the plant has to be killed and then the cotton can be gotten off the boll because it is open. This is not easy because the raw cotton is tough to work with and very dense. The cotton picker goes through the field than pulls the cotton off the bolls. It takes several times to get all of the cotton. When cotton was hand picked it was put into bags until full.
