When I was with my narcissist he had very shallow, untrustworthy friends. He led his life as if he was this almighty powerful person, but when it came right down to it the only people in his life he could trust were the ones who had no idea how he really was, and no one else. Yhis friends is good to party with and take him here, this friend is tough and makes him look cool etc. The only friends he had that truly cared for him, had NO IDEA how he really was. They would say how sweet and good he was, and what a wonderful person he is, and they had no idea how awful he really was. Yet he considered them his closest friends. I think they mostly hang out with people who have no idea who they are, or people that are only there for the look. It's what I've noticed anyway.
