Why did Hussein launch attacks on Israel in 1991?

Operation Desert Storm (Jan/Feb 1991) was a very simple military campaign: eject a third rate nation from the country of Kuwait. This was accomplished within "100 Hours." The only recourse Saddam had was to create a HOLY WAR; this would arose the Arab nations to rally to Iraq's support. It would then be the world against the Arabs (instead of simply kicking Iraq out of Kuwait). Times have changed today, but in 1991, Israel still had a reputation. That reputation was, "...mess with Israel, and it was war!" Israel fought back at the least attack during those times. Saddam knew this. When he launched his missiles at Israel, he knew they would counterattack him. He also knew that if Israel counter-attacked Iraq, the Arab nations would not tolerate Israel's attacking a fellow Arab nation. Saddam was have his HOLY WAR. President Bush Sr. knew all of this also. And Bush personally ensured Israel that if they didn't intervene, they would save their reputation and no further harm would to Israel. To help convince Israel not to counter-attack, the US supplied (publicly...there was more) Patriot missiles to personally protect Israel from further missile attacks. Israel did NOT counter-attack; Saddam NEVER got his Holy War; and Desert Storm successfully concluded less than 30 days after it started.

Can a gentile converted to Judaism migrate to Israel?

There is debate concerning this issue within both Israel and the Diaspora.

The current Right of Return Law in Israel holds that any Orthodox conversion performed inside or outside of the State of Israel is sufficient to make the Convert eligible for Right of Return. Any non-Orthodox conversion performed outside of the State of Israel is insufficient to make the Convert eligible.

Of course, any person (aside from certain select populations) can immigrate to Israel according to the normal means of attaining residency and gaining citizenship the "long-way", so the migration is not as much of an issue as the instant citizenship.

How did the British respond to the conflict between Arabs and Jews?

A:At the beginning of the twentieth century, the total Jewish population of Palestine was estimated at around 20,000 persons, but this quickly increased with legal and illegal immigration. British policy on the territory was informed by the Balfour Declaration of 1917, whereby Palestine would be regarded as a homeland for the Jews, subject to the rights of the Arabs, but would not necessarily be an independent state. By 1939, Britain was moving away from this position, and a white Paper recommended that an Arab state of Palestine be created.

In order to force Britain's hand and ensure a favourable outcome, the Jews commenced a program of terrorism, with the Stern Gang as the main participant. In 1946, the British headquarters in the King David Hotel were blown up. By February 1947, the number of British casualties in Palestine has risen sharply and Britain called on the UN to solve the Palestinian problem.

Ilan Pappe from the University of Haifa, Israel, says (A History of Modern Palestine: One Land, Two Peoples) that after March 1948 both sides commence military campaigns, but the Jews were better organised and more effective. Jewish forces committed the Dir Yassin massacre in Haifa, and elsewhere.

The British response during the Palestinian War of May 1948 to January 1949 was to cut off supplies of weapons and ammunition to Egypt and other allies of the Palestinians, leaving them unable to fight effectively. Israel was aligned to the Soviet Union and continued to receive materiel to prosecute the war.

Why was the Balfour Declaration reversed?

The Balfour Declaration was never reversed as such (it was never withdrawn or determined to not represent the British interest). However, the British government took policies in the 1930s and 1940s which went strongly counter to the intentions of the Balfour Declaration.

The reason that the British made this about-face in their policies was that they wished to appease the Arabs and hopefully be able to extract their oil wealth even as they became independent. As hindsight shows, this policy was misguided since the oil nationalization that occurred throughout the Arab World and Iran in the 1950s and 1960s upset British oil intentions in this regard. Additionally, Arab States still malign Britain and its laws while Israel has proven to be a strong British ally.

The British government also wanted to prevent the escalation of tensions in Mandatory Palestine and believed that preventing more Jews from arriving in the territory would help achieve that. Whether that view is correct or not is debatable.

What is the connection between the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and Iraq?

Often Arabs try to link these conflicts to show that Western Imperialist powers are the reason that they cannot succeed. Of course, this fails to take into account that Israel is not an imperialist power. (It has no foreign colonies.) This also fails to take into account the very different motivations behind the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and the Iraq War.

What concessions does each side expect of the other as concerns Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations?

This question is difficult to answer because expectations vary between individuals on the same side of the conflict as to what they see as the most likely moves by the opposition and which issues they prefer resolved than the other. What's easier to list is what the likelihood that each desired gain from each side could be born out through negotiations. (I did not add "peace" simply because both sides want "peace", it's just a question of how you define it.)

How has the religion of Judaism influenced and contributed to Zionism?

When Zionism was first debated, it was debated outside of the Jewish religious circles. It came exclusively from members of the Haskalah (Jewish Enlightenment) and it was created to mirror the various nationalisms of Europe, such as German and Italian nationalism. Zionism described the Jews as a nation or people, with the particular work Judensvolk - Jewish people. Herzl, Ahad Ha'am, Jabotinsky, Trumpeldor, and Weizmann and other leading Zionists were all (1) Atheist or Agnostic, (2) never used scriptural references when discussing the Jewish State - except as evidence that Jews used to live in the Holy Land and their longing for it, (3) never sought rabbinical or community approval, and (4) wished to create a democratic state in violation of Halakha (which provides for the theocratic monarchy). Zionism only used Judaism in the most general sense, such as using Jewish symbols such as the blue and white from the tallit to form a flag or using the Jewish star as a national symbol.

In fact, only a small minority of religious Jews accepted Zionism before Israeli independence, led by Rav. Avraham Kook in the 1930s. He claimed that Zionism was supportable as an intermediate stepping stone to an eventual Jewish religious state. However, Rav Kook and the Religious Zionist movement did have increasing sway in Israel after 1967 when it became tied with Israeli government initiatives to populate the West Bank and Judaize East Jerusalem (in response to the Jewish depopulation during the Jordanian Occupation). The Religious Zionists use the religious narrative from Rav Kook, but take it one step further. In many cases, any Israeli national policy which would controvert the rise of the theocratic Jewish state in all of Mandatory Palestine should be opposed.

Most Orthodox Jews do not consider Israel to be a Jewish State, but rather a non-religious state run by Jews. It is worth noting that religious Judaism has also critiqued Zionism and sees the state apparatus as something designed to remove the uniqueness of the Jewish mission. Some take this to its farthest extreme and declare Israel to be a blasphemy without having a Messiah.

Liberal Judaism also has mixed opinions on Zionism. Some Jews have replaced devotion to God and religion with a strong patriotism to Israel and Zionism as its founding ideology and history. Other Liberal Jews take a view that Judaism supports liberal thought and development and so supporting a democracy like Israel is worth doing. Still others reject Zionism as a valid political avenue for Jewish self-realization and development.
