What are the minority rights in Israel?

  • While Jews are not permitted to live (or are severely restricted) in many Arab countries, Arabs in Israel are granted full citizenship.
  • Israel is one of the most open societies in the world.
  • Israel is the only country in the Middle East that provides full equality for women. Women are free to drive cars (unlike Saudi Arabia), and to dress without veils or other compulsory styles. Women in Israel are protected by law from discrimination and abuse; and they participate in all walks of life, from homemaker to combat soldier to Prime Minister and Supreme Court President. Women comprise nearly 51% of all magistrate and district court judges; and more than 44% of all lawyers registered in Israel are women.
  • More than 200,000 Arab children attend Israeli schools. At the time of Israel's founding, there was just one Arab high school in the country. Today, there are hundreds of Arab schools.
  • Israel is the only country in the region that permits citizens of all faiths to worship freely and openly. Twenty-five percent of Israeli citizens are non-Jewish. Each religious community in Israel has the right to found its own religious schools, councils, and courts; and is given jurisdiction to preside over matters of personal status such as marriage and divorce. The holy places of each religion are controlled by officials of that faith, not by the Israeli government.
  • Israel is a parliamentary democracy, with an active multi-party system representing a wide range of political views. While the United States has only two major parties, Israeli voters typically have more than a dozen parties to choose from, representing a wide variety of political views. Even relatively small parties, including those whose primary support is among Israeli Arabs, regularly win seats in the Knesset. Arabs are granted full citizenship and have the right to vote in Israel. Arabs are also free to become members of the Israeli parliament (the Knesset). In fact, several Arabs have been democratically elected to the Knesset and have been serving there for years. Israel is also one of the few places in the Middle East where Arab women may vote.
  • All the freedoms and liberties that Americans have from their bill of rights and constitution, are equally protected in Israel. Israelis enjoy freedom of religion, freedom of speech and press, freedom of assembly, and the right to protest and to petition the government. Many major news outlets from around the world (including the BBC, CNN and Fox News) station their Middle East bureaus and correspondents in Israel. One reason is because Israel is so well-known for its genuine freedom of speech and the press.
  • Government-owned land can be leased by anyone, regardless of race, religion or gender. Arab citizens of Israel, like everyone else, are eligible to lease government land.
  • Israeli law prohibits discrimination by both government and non-government entities on the basis of race, religion, lifestyle, political beliefs, or age.

Why is it so important to understand that the Church is not Israel?

I'm not real sure where you are coming from with this question. In a very real sense, the Church is Israel, the real Israel. When God first revealed Himself to the Jews, it was with the express purpose of making Himself, and His Law known to all of mankind. The Israel of the Old Covenant was drawn back into itself in an effort to keep it holy for the Messiah that was to come, but when the Jews that did accept the Messiah began the Church under the New Covenant it was still very much Israel, and the rest of the world is gradually, painfully slowly, but gradually, coming to recognize Him. Thus the Church is the New Israel, if you will, the Israel that did accept that Jesus was the promised Messiah. If you use the word "Israel" to refer to those who are still under the Old Covenant and are descendants of those who did not recognize Our Blessed Lord as the Messiah, you also must recognize that many did accept Him, and we are their descendants, spiritually, if not physically.

ANSWER: The church is NOT Israel. I realize that the Catholic Church leans in this direction, but there are many differences between the Catholic Church and the rest of Christianity.

You will be mislead in many doctrines if you believe the church is Israel. They are two different programs in the New Testament age. The only Jews at the present time who are under the New Covenant are Individual Jews who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. (We are in the New Covenant age, but it will do you no good if you do not except it) . A careful reading and study will reveal that God has not finished with the Jewish people as of yet. There is a time coming when Israel will come into a great prominence and the program God has for them is very much different from the church.

This theology is called "Replacement Theology" and it is not according

to the Bible.

It is important to know the difference as you will be misled especially in eschatology. You will most certainly go through the Great Tribulation period that is coming upon the whole earth.

Here is but one prophecy that will NOT be fulfilled if the church and Israel are the same. Jeremiah 31:31-32, " Behold the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah

not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, though I was a husband to them, says the LORD."

This prophecy will be fulfilled at the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

Please read Romans, chapters 9, 10, and 11.

To what extent is Israeli law based on religion?

"To what extent is Israeli law based on religion?" The Israeli legal system consists of Secular courts and Religious courts. In a general sense, Israeli law is based on the Jewish religion as far as basic, core beliefs having to do with societal values, as 'Western' democratic governments tend to be (think in terms of, "thou shalt not murder"). For instance, the Israel Defense Force's code of ethics consists of a lot of Jewish influences and values (not necessarily law). Specifically, Jewish law plays out within Israeli law in issues of marriage, divorce and conversion. However, on the whole Israeli law is based on British Mandate law (and in land ownership matter sometimes on Ottoman law) and often the courts try and change religious law. This causes a lot of tension between the secular and religious citizens; the latter believing that religious law cannot be changed by humans.

How can you visit other Muslim countries after visiting Israel on your American passport?

Answer 1What I have seen as a frequent TravelerIts legal but I personally would not do it. They could turn you away. But they could turn you away for just being American with that passport. besides, almost all Muslim countries with the exception of Turkey and UAE require visas to enter the country. If you MUST visit Muslim countries and Israel all at one time, simply go to the Muslim countries first and visit Israel last. This would only work once. Once you been to Israel at all, you must use another passport or never try and get into say Syria again. Israel is a strong ally to the US and love America and will let you in no matter where you've been essentially. But to answer shortly again, Its possible but rather risky and generally not common. I personally have 3 passports, EU, Swiss, and US. I travel on EU almost always and have used the Swiss when I went to israel and Egypt all in the same vacation last summer. Obtain as many passports as you can through ancestry. That's another topic.

Answer 2

In Israel it is permissible to ask for them to stamp a looseleaf page so that you can rip it out of your passport when you intend later to go to a Muslim-majority country that does not allow those with Israel stamps to enter. However, if you plan to enter or leave Israel from an Arab crossing (Taba, Egypt, or one of the three Jordanian crossings) the Arabs will not be as kind. Many Muslim-majority countries will reject you if you have a stamp from any of these crossings because they know that they go to Israel.

In my view, though, it is not worth going to a country which is actively trying to prevent your entry.

Do the ethnic and religious groups of Israel live peacefully?

Within Israel's borders, yes. In the Occupied Territories, no.

This does not mean that within Israel all of the groups live harmoniously. There are definitely big questions and issues that Israel's minority communities face, but they address those problems with rallies, unique political parties, and other peaceful mechanisms to hopefully change their situation. In the Occupied Territories, there is a distinction between Israeli Jews, who are subject to Israeli civil law and Palestinian Arabs who are subject to Israeli martial law. These two groups do not live peacefully together.

How do you write congratulations on your wedding in israel?

Technically, it's "Mazal Tov al hakhatunah shelakhem" = מזל טוב על החתונה שלכם

But my advice is not to attempt to write a personal message in a language

with which you're neither familiar nor comfortable. English is taught in all

elementary schools in Israel, and you can walk down the street anywhere

and always be near somebody in the crowd who speaks perfect English.

Write your message in English. You'll be a lot more comfortable, and the

recipients will have no problem at all getting the message.

Why do some people hate Jews also what are some ways to spot a Jew living near you?

There are numerous reasons why Jews are hated and to avoid replicating them, here, please see the Related Question on just that topic, linked to below.

As for "recognizing Jews". This is a very sensitive matter since Racial Anti-Semitism has often been predicated on Jews looking a certain way or walking in a certain fashion, etc. As a result, it becomes problematic. Also the phrasing of the question "spot a Jew" seems to indicate fear or loathing of them as opposed to "meet a Jew" or "find a Jew". There is nothing to fear or loathe a Jew for. As for being able to see them, religious Jews, especially the men, often wear religious paraphernalia such as kippot (skullcaps) and talitot (shawls with fringes). Some strains of Judaism also have payyot (sideburn curls). Religious Jewish women often dress more modestly than most Westerners, covering their arms, legs, and bosom. Non-religious Jews are indistinguishable from general Western Society.
