Why was England left out as an ally of Israel?

For much of the first half of the 20th century, Israel was controlled by England under the authority of the U.N. The English authorities did many things the Jews did not like, especially limiting the number who could immigrate from Europe. Many still hold a grudge. Technically, though, England is a moderately reliable ally to Israel, just a little behind the U.S. in that category.

What forms the border between Israel and Jordan?

The Jordan River. There is a small part of the Jordan River north of the West Bank that was part of the Israeli-Jordanian border. This has been greatly expanded since the Six-Day War of 1967, when Israel occupied the West Bank territory and acquired a much longer stretch of the Jordan River. Prior to that war the West Bank was part of Jordan & Jerusalem was a divided city.

The Jordan River forms a large part of that international boundary (between Israel-West Bank and Jordan.

South of the Dead Sea, the Israeli-Jordanian border follows the Wadi Arabah valley.

How is the Israeli legislator different than the US legislator?

There are really four main differences between a U.S. legislator and an Israeli Member of the Knesset.

1) Legislative/Executive Powers: The Knesset serves both as the legislative body and the body from Israel's chief executives. As a result, an Israeli legislator can often have executive duties that correspond to the U.S. Presidency or Cabinet officials.

2) Constitutional Authority: The Israeli Members of the Knesset generally have normal legislative sessions, but they can also convene for the purpose of passing Basic Laws, which are effectively equivalent to U.S. Constitutional Amendments. The rules for passing Basic Laws require much more agreement between Knesset members and more stringent voting requirements, but unlike the U.S. which requires authorities outside of the legislature to pass Constitutional Amendments, the Knesset is wholly responsible for passing Basic Laws.

3) Limited Authority: The U.S. Congress has authority limited to those enumerated in Article I, Section 8, with all remaining powers being vested in the US States. For example, the U.S. Congress cannot pass laws regarding marriage and divorce law. This is based on the aspect of federalism in the United States, but since Israel is a unitary state, the Knesset has the authority to make any laws that are not in violation of rights protected by the Basic Laws.

4) Independence of Opinion:
The political parties in the U.S. are simply a bellwether of a politician's political opinions, but each U.S. politician is an individual whose views may differ from the traditional views of the party. The political parties in Israel establish a platform and all of the members of those parties are required to support all of the views of that party and dissent is sufficient to be excommunicated from the political parties.

Is the Israeli assault on Hamas justified?

* Both sides in this dispute claim that they are justified. * Both sides are probably right.

However, the fact that someone is justified in taking a course of action does not mean that they ought to, or even must, take that course of action.

Both sides over-react - which is always the danger when people are diametrically opposed to each other's attitudes.

Do ALL people who train to become rabbis and cantors have to go to Israel as part of their training?

It all depends on the brand of Judaism; because for centuries the state of Israel did not even exist, use your common sense, how can it be "necessary?" I mean you had people being ordained as Rabbis, who could not possibly make the trip. However among the ultra Orthodox and fanatical religious reform Jews, that is the general preference. If you want to become a Rabbi, it is better that you just move there for your studies to avoid problems.
