Who made up the workforce what were their their working conditions?
The workforce historically comprised a diverse group of individuals, including men, women, and children, often from various socioeconomic backgrounds. Many worked in factories, mines, and agricultural settings, facing long hours, low wages, and hazardous conditions. Labor laws were often minimal or nonexistent, leading to exploitation and a lack of worker protections. Over time, movements for labor rights emerged, advocating for better conditions, fair pay, and the establishment of unions.

How does a placement agency or a recruitment company work?
In my experience, I've never found a recruitment or placement agency that was worth the money they demanded. Some agencies offer little more than lists of companies and contact info, much of which can be outdated. Other agencies purport to offer services such as resume writing, private leads, meetings with inside contacts and support in job and salary negotiation. My experience with such an agency was dismal. The "inside contacts" turned out to be other clients like myself who were also looking for work. And while these agencies can help you put together a good resume, it's nothing you couldn't learn and do on your own.
There may be some good agencies out there, but be very wary. If they worked like they say they do, all anyone would have to do is shell out a few bucks to find a dream job.
First you look at any job leads that the recruitment or placement agency placed on all the career boards to see if you are the right fit. Then you will go to their website to register. Once the recruitement or placement agency received your resume through their website, someone who works there will give you a call to for an "interview". They will not ask you the regular interview questions like tell me something about yourself. The recruiter will ask you what type of assignments will you like to fill. You can't say I will take anything. That is going a lit overboard. For example let's say you visit one who specialize in admin and you can't tell them you will like to be an admin if you never had the experience to begin with. These people won't place you. They will place you according to your skill level. After telling the recruiter what type of assignments you will like to fill, then you will take a couple of tests to see if your score is up to their standards. If it is, then they will find "work" for you. Mostly it is temp work and it is very rare that they will send you on a temp-to-hire because you will never be hired on a full time basis for that company. They charge outrageous fees. These people are very good in finding work only if they really place people. There are some agencies who never place people at all So ask people you know which agency (ies) they recommend.

Is quitting your job over the phone good or bad?
It is considered good practice to give a written two-week notice or letter of resignation in person. In many cases, failing to do so will put you on a do not hire list and you will not be eligible for re-hire. This may also mean that you would not get a good reference from the company.
It is always best not to burn bridges, so to speak. You may think that you wouldn't want to return to your job but may later realize that you need to do so. To be put on a do not hire list is not good for your career.
If you must quit over the phone due to circumstances, I would suggest stating that the circumstances are the reason why and that you will follow up with a letter of resignation in person, if possible.
Why is the work week 40 hours long?
People in general do it because it is part of the agreement that you make when you enter into an employment agreement with an employer. The 40 hour a week schedule is actually an improvement over the 16 hour days that some people worked long ago... laws were put in place to protect people a little from things like that.
I do it because I like my job and I don't have a social life to balance it with. But I do think that everyone's lives would be better if we all had more balanced lives and got more done in less time... which I feel like more people could, if they had the motivation of a little more time to themselves. Too many corporate cultures encourage loyalty to the company above all, including physical and emotional health... so if you stay 50 or 60 hours instead of 40 then you are more valuable... when actually you are probably just more burnt out.
