The introduction of modern education was an event of great historical significance for India. It was definitely a progressive act of the British rule. Three main agencies were responsible for the spread of modern education in India: the foreign Christian missionaries, the British government and progressive Indians. Christian missionaries, who did extensive work in the sphere of spread of modern education in India, were inspired mainly by a proselytizing spirit to spread Christianity among the people. These missionaries started educational institutions which along with imparting modern secular education also gave religious instructions in Christianity. The British Government was, however, the principal agent in disseminating modern education in India. It established a network of schools and colleges in India which turned out educated Indians well-versed in modern knowledge. The introduction of modern education in India was primarily motivated by politico-administrative and economic needs of Britain in India. However, they were convinced that the spread of British culture would bring about a social and political unification of the world. The third powerful force spreading modern education in India comprised enlightened Indians. Persons like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Keshab Chandra Sen, Rabindra Nath Tagore, Ishwar Chander Vidyasagar, Ranade, Dayanand Saraswati, Ramakrishna Vivekanand, etc. worked towards the establishment of modern education. Modern education had fundamentally different orientation and organization as compared to traditional education. Thus, with the introduction of the Western system of education both the meaning and content of education underwent significant changes. Modern education was also the medium for spread of modern science and ideas of equality and liberty. It becomes less religious. Besides, many new branches of learning were introduced. The printing press revolutionized the educational system in that the emphasis shifted from personal, oral communication to impersonal communication of idea through books, journals and other media. It brought the sacred scripture within the reach of many castes who had not been allowed by custom to read them. Modern education was gradually thrown by custom to read them. Try and set a time limit for yourself so you have a goal to achieve. It will give you something to aim for, instead of trying to go really fast. Have a friend time you, and try and go over a section that you are trying to read faster. Reading more often also helps.

Why is it so easy to read the road while driving at 70 miles per hour, while it is far more difficult to read text at only 200 wpm? Think about it. Reading the road in a car should be far more difficult since we read in four directions: front, back, left, and right. A book sits in front of you in one direction. Yet in just a few days, most of us only remember about 10% of what we read, but while driving we get so bored we turn on the radio and talk to friends. Understanding the difference between these two types of reading will unlock your child's reading speed.

The difference between reading the road and reading a book is simple. While driving in a car your brain processes all the data as a movie. The result is information that is easy to process. Reading text is quite different. During reading there seems to be an imaginary person in back of your head that reads aloud: one….word….at….a….time. This imaginary voice creates the bottleneck that slows down your reading. The solution is simple, start viewing a movie of the text while reading-just like you did while reading the road during driving.

How can you begin seeing more while reading? Instinctively you already have started to master this skill, but not quite enough to increase your reading speed. When you first learn to read, you read letters. The dog is viewed by your brain as the letters:

"d o g." As your reading skill progresses you begin to see these individual letters as a single word. "Hot" is another word comprised of only three letters. However, placing the word hot in front of the word dog changes the meaning of both words. You don't see hot dog as a dog that is hot. Instead you recognize a popular food. Your brain has chunked these two separate words into one unit of meaning.

Look at this grouping of words: United States of America. Your brain doesn't see four words; instead, it sees one grouping that you recognize as our country. By learning to speed read your brain quickly adjusts to chunking large groupings of individual words into easy to understand units of meaning. Illiteracy: What Can It Lead To?

One of the effects of illiteracy is the escalation of high school dropout rates for young adults and their later unemployment. Additional issues that illiteracy effects are weak self-esteem, poverty, and incarceration. Being illiterate, many people can not find jobs and are not capable of providing for their families which unfortunately may lead to theft in order to give their families what they need. Without any take-home pay from a job, poverty can occur, which can also lead to criminal behaviors. Statistics have found that more than half of prison inmates are illiterate and 85% of all the minors that are arrested have trouble reading. Self-esteem can be affected by illiteracy to a point that the illiterate person may feel there is no hope of ever becoming literate. Ridicule from peers can lower already low self- esteem.
