The 2 components of pain are fast pain, and slow pain. Fast pain is a sharp, localized pain and slow pain is dull and diffused and mostly unpleasant.
From the physiological perspective, in order to feel pain pain, one must have a brain. The central nervous system of a maggot is extremely primitive. It has a tiny ganglion (a "knot" of neurons - nerve cells), not a brain. Of course, it doesn't mean that a maggot does not respond to stimuli. If you poke a maggot with a sharp object, it will retreat or respond in some other way to get away from danger. But this response is pure reflex. The same is true about any primitive life form.

Salsalate is an NSAID. It decreases inflammation and relieves pain. It is not a narcotic, thus it is not addictive, is milder, and is used for different types of pain than Percocet. Salsalate has different chemical properties than Percocet and affects different neurotransmitters. Angie RN
Are people with chronic pain insensitivity in danger?
Yes! Without a shadow of a doubt!
As the mother of a 2 year old daughter who feels no "external" pain, only abdominal pain (which in itself is rather rare in the world of pain insensitivity) ... the horrors of self-mutilation are just one problem which occurs with no feeling of pain.
She has currently bitten the end of her tongue off, bitten straight through her lower lip, bitten a finger almost down to the bone, chewed all of her inner cheek surfaces and tongue repeatedly ... to the point where it was deemed absolutely necessary that her baby teeth be removed. She has had several GA's to accomplish that - although each one was left until it became obvious that "this time her teeth erupted" wasn't going to be any different to the previous ones, and that she was biting herself yet again. At one point, she bled constantly for three weeks before having her teeth extracted!
However; that is just one aspect of feeling no pain. She has no sense of what may harm her and no learning curve. She is forever falling over, and smacking herself into doorways, tables, walls etc and doesn't learn that she shouldn't - because it never hurts her so she doesn't learn the need to avoid them. As she also has a chronic itching sensation, she will quite literally tear entire patches of her skin off ... and is now extensively scarred already. Although my daughter is capable of feeling "temperature" sensation, many who have pain insensitivity are not and therefore at great risk of burning themselves on any heat source and - in one case I am aware of - dying of heat exhaustion or hypothermia - simply from stepping outside for more than a few minutes, because she is unaware that the outside temperature is too hot or too cold for her body. There is also the risk of undiagnosed appendicitis, because the "pain" is not felt in most - until the appendix has ruptured and it is too late to stop the resulting poisoning. Once the appendix bursts, it is an immediately life-threatening event .. and some have died from it not being noticed from the "typical" signs.
Other risks of death include unnoticed fractures, leading to severe bone sepsis and osteomyelitis. Most people with pain insensitivity will end up with several painless fractures and a huge number end up with extensively damaged joints from "wear and tear" with no feeling at the time.
And - of course - there are the psychological aspects which come from having no pain. Some end up feeling so different from their peers that they simply "learn" to cry when they injure themselves when they see blood ... but there are those who become fearless. These children feel invincible and will deliberately put themself in danger, to show off how superhuman they are, when sadly, the opposite is true. One 14 year old boy - who was a regular at his local A+E from all the stunts he did and injuries he self-caused - died on the way to hospital after jumping from the roof of his house ... to impress his friends.
So ... yes! I would say that chronic pain insensitivity IS a danger. One that is understood by most people who immediately react like it's a good thing that my daughter cannot feel pain ... until the reality actually hits them. Then they have nothing but shock and pity for her.

Can you take the lidoderm patch off to shower and then put it back on?
You can, but as a general rule you should try to cover it with something rather than remove it. Once the adhesive of the patch has stuck to your skin and you remove it, it's hard to get it to stick again without some type of assistance, like a Bioclusive cover or even clear medical tape on the edges. The reason is that when you remove it, it also removes a thin layer of skin that it was attached to, or the dirt/hair/particles that were on your skin at the time. That means when you try to attach it again, you're not getting the full adhesion quality of a new patch. It's like pulling a piece of tape off of a package and trying to reuse it.
Just cover it with piece of plastic - you can use a Ziploc or you can even use Saran wrap wrapped around your arm stuck to itself. Cut it to fit over the patch, then tape it with waterproof/resistant medical tape. Most patches are made to be worn in a shower anyway, so you can probably use it without problem unless your skin isn't conducive to great adhesion. The key to any patch sticking well is prepping the skin properly, as skin oil, hairs, dirt and other things can reduce the adhesion effectiveness.
Bioclusive patches are available and used by many who wear Fentanyl patches. While they're not cheap, they are effective in covering the patch. Prepping your skin is the best option though - clean the area well, give it a good wipe with isopropyl alchohol, then rinse it and dry it well. Always rinse any area you've used Iso on as it leaves a residue that can interfere with adhesion. When you put the patch on, hold your hand over it for about a minute. The heat from your hand and body works to soften the adhesive, making it stick better and also harder for water to just make it come off easily.
You can also use a product called Skin-Prep to further help hold the patch if you're having problems. Skin-Prep is product that comes in wipes like alcohol pads, that you put on your skin where the edges of the patch will stick to. It significantly increases adhesion ability through any type of wetness. Skin-Prep can be found in most pharmacies - it's normally used by colostomy patients, but is great for patches of any type. There are 2 kinds - the original tends to sting, but the other one doesn't. The no-sting type is also a lot more expensive, but worth it.
Could a 6 year old child's daily stomach ache and mouth blister be related to H1N1 vaccine?
That would be unlikely to have any relationship with the vaccine.
But a daily stomach ache in a 6 year old should be evaluated by their pediatrician.

Go get at least an xray from the doctor.
You could have done a lot to it, tore your cartilage, your ligiment, meniscus, broke your knee cap, plenty. I had knee pain after I played a game and thought hey after I ice it, it will be good. No, it got worse, and I had to get arthoscopy surgery, they do this simple small incision procedure to clean up and fix and find everything wrong with your knee while in there because some xrays/mri's dont show your problems up. Good luck! Hope your knee feels better soon.
What is this problem leg goes dead for no reason and lasts aprox 15 minutes Is this bad circulation?
I beg to differ with you - there is ALWAYS a reason for a leg to go numb. Finding out what it is depends on your symptoms.
It depends on whether or not you're feeling any pain elsewhere in your body when it happens. While you can cut off blood flow and a limb will fall asleep if the blood flow is lowered, then of course it's due to circulation. If however you're getting pain in your back and then it goes to sleep, that's a nerve problem.
Anytime you experience a lack of feeling for any reason it means that something is being cut off - a nerve, circulation, whatever. Regardless of which one it is, if it happens on a regular basis it isn't good and you need to get it checked to determine what's causing it.
