Can people with citrus allergies eat citric acid?

yes.

-

Just be careful where the citric acid comes from. it comes from a wide variety of places - citrus fruits, corn, raspberries, plants, tomatoes, you produce it yourself, etc.

Its very hard to find out which food has a safe citric acid in and which doesn't.

I have a citric acid allergy. And a citrus allergy. I can eat home grown raspberries and tomatoes.

If you grow your own fruits and veggies you have a better chance.

why? if you go buy raspberries - tho it's own citric acid is safe, most food producers cover the fruit or veggie in a citric acid bath to promote longevity on the shelf.

so you may end up thinking you are allergic to another fruit or veggie when in actuality, it's what's on it.

The problem with the world is - most foods have citric acid in it now, and if it's not in the food then it;s in the packaging or on the food.

What causes hives?

Hives is an allergic reaction. The physical manifestation of "hives," also called urticaria is caused by localized capillary leak, usually caused by histamine release from eosinophils and mast cells as a result of an allergic reaction. There are other causes, however. Some people have a genetic predisposition to developing hives, some medications can cause a histamine release that is not related to an allergic reaction that can cause an urticarial rash.

Hives can be caused by many sources. Acute hives are not long lasting, and typically can clear up on their own or be alleviated with the use of anti-histamines.

In this case, most causes might include food allergies, allergic reactions to medication, dyes, stress, gluten intolerance, or general intolerance to something in your diet.

Chronic urticaria (the given name for long lasting hives) is usually harder to deduce. Heat, physical stimulus, water, sometimes parasites, infections can all be linked as known causes of long-term hives.
