My 1927 alto sax intonation is way sharp when playing notes in the second octave but no problem playing notes in the first octave Is there a fix?

I don't play alto sax (I'm a horn player) but I've learned clarinet and think I know enough to help answer your question.

That sounds like a pretty sweet sax =D Has it always been like that or did you notice a change after you bought it? If something has changed over time, I'd say bring it into the shop for it to be looked at. If it has always been like that, I don't know if it's fixable.

Is is possible that the hole size is too small? That could be worth looking into.

Why is an alto sax and a baritone sax Eb and soprano and tenor sax in Bb?

Because they are all different sizes, but the inventor wanted the fingering to be the same for every size. The only way to do that when the natural length of one size makes its lowest note a fourth lower than the smaller size, is to have the music written in different keys - transposed. When an alto sax plays the fingering for a C, the sound that comes out has a concert pitch of E-flat. When a tenor sax uses the same fingering, and it's still called a C, the note that comes out has a concert pitch of B-flat.

To make them sound the same concert pitch, the different sizes have to be written as different notes. If a composer wants an alto sax to play a concert C, he or she will write the part as an A. If a composer wants a tenor sax to play a concert C, he or she will write the part as a D.

By making the fingering the same for different sizes, and putting the burden of transposing on the composer/writer and publisher, even a relative amateur player can switch from one size of saxophone to another fairly easily. This allows many students to learn on the alto sax, which is small enough for 6th graders to play, and then switch to the larger saxophones when the player has gotten bigger, such as in high school, without having to learn all new fingering.

The clarinet family has the same system, by the way - the regular clarinet is a B-flat instrument, the alto clarinet is an E-flat, the bass clarinet is a B-flat.

Where was the amati kraslice aas22 sax made?

ALL Amati saxophones were/are made in the Czech Republic (formerly Czechoslovakia). There are rumours that they subcontract to asia, like almost everyone else. However, if you look at the neck receiver on every sax made after around 1985...you will see it is stamped CZ or Czechoslovakia. Before then the Czech stamp was found below the serial number on the body.

Also, they really do not resemble asian horns at all....they are a straight pedigree from when the company began in the 1920's. I believe that they are mistaken for asian-made because their prices are so reasonable.

The company still produces from Kraslice (aka Grazlitz).

Does a plastic mouthpiece expand in boiling water?

DON'T TRY IT. It probably would, but you might accidentally melt it. You don't want to have to buy a new mouthpiece and break in the cork, reed, and ligature and those are kind of expensive.

What is the highest note that an alto saxophone can play?

The alto saxophone has a range of 2.5 octaves.

From the B flat (below middle c) all the way up to F sharp 3. The high F# may be played using a high F# fingering or an alternate fingering for the note. However with the altissimo range the range is considerably higher.

It also depends on your experience with the instrument.

The Alto Saxophone can play ~30 notes in the normal range. The altissimo range extend it.

NOTE:

It is actually possible to play everything above a low b flat.

This is due to the fact that OVERTONES can be played as well by experienced players.

How do you play you raise me up on alto sax?

Depends what version (original by Secret Garden or one of the covers by Westlife, Josh Groban and many others) and since the original doesn't have alto sax, you need to decide which instrument you want to play from the song.

It's easiest if you find the score sheet, but quickly by ear I would say the main vocal melody of the chorus is just going back and forth G A B C notes, and the high note hit occasionally is D instead of the A (G D B C). So the first two loops would be:

you G raise A me B up C

so C i C can B stand A on G moun A tains G

you G raise D me B up C

to C walk C on B stor A my G seas A

Might not be 100% correct on the last line, but hope it helps.
