Animal Parasites

Animal parasites refer to the common parasites that afflict animals, such as worms, ticks, mites, lice, and fleas. Animal parasites come in two varieties, external and internal, and can be very troublesome for the animal, sometimes leading to severe illness or death. There are often treatment options for these parasites, but the best way avoid exposure is for animals to receive regular veterinary care.

Can giving worm medicine hurt a dog if the dog does not have worms?

for what kind of worms? tape?no it does not hurt the dog..unless its heartworms...if you suspect your dog has heartworms DONOT give him the heartworm medication instead immediately schedule an appt with your vet

A DifferentOf COURSE it causes harm. Wormer is poison. Wormer can hurt your dog even if he has worms, so it can certainly do damage to a dog who is healthy. A good natural wormer comes in the form of white pumpkin seeds. Dried and crushed, give your dog a tablespoon full (or so) a day for one week... it's usually more than enough to see solid results.

What do indoor cats mainly eat?

The best cat foods are the ones with a very high, named meat content (labelled as Chicken, Turkey, Rabbit, Lamb, Tuna, etc.) as the FIRST ingredient with no grains, wheat, corn or any other cereals. Be sure to keep away from Ingredients such as grain, corn, wheat gluten, various sugars as they serve no nutritional value to the cat whatsoever.

A good quality wet food is far better for a cat as far as nutrition is concerned. Cats are strict carnivores, so get all their energy from Protein and Fat which is abundant in meat. Moisture is also a very important factor as cats are designed to get their moisture from their food (a trait that has been passed down from their wild ancestors), and therefore have a low "thirst drive" and will not often seek out water on their own.

A cat fed solely on dry food can get less than half of its daily intake of moisture. A cat in a constant state of dehydration can cause Urinary Tract Infections, Cystitis and other problems. However, owners can combat this by feeding more wet food and purchasing a water fountain or leaving a tap on to entice the cat to drink.

Many brands of dry food, including IAMS, Purina, Friskies, and Science Diet (despite the price!), are packed with carbohydrates - "filler" in the way of corns and grains, none of which cats can digest. Grain is used instead of meat because it is cheaper to produce and helps the kibble pieces hold together. However, some high quality dry food brands such as Orijen, Innova and Applaws are free of grains and cereals.

Because kibble is baked at such high temperatures, all the "natural" nutrition is destroyed. Wet food isn't processed to such high levels as this, so most of the nutrition stays intact.

Lastly, it is not proven that dry food cleans a cat's teeth. Kibble is hard and brittle, so shatters at the tips of the teeth - providing little or no cleaning friction. Dental issues usually start under or around the gumline, so kibble is usually ineffective. Some cats don't even chew; they will just swallow the kibble whole. However, some cats will have perfect teeth no matter what food they eat, while others will not benefit at all.

For high-quality Cat food there is: Blue Buffalo, Felidae, Weruva, California Natural, Instinct, Prairie, Natural Balance, Eagle Pack, Wellness, EVO, Bozita (the canned stuff is 90+% meat and can be bought from zooplus.co.uk), HiLife (60% meat), Feline Fayre, to name a few.

Should a puppy bleed after being wormed?

If done properly with the proper medication for the proper parasites then the pup should be feeling better. You should take a fecal sample plus the pup into see your Veterinarian for a check up and to see what types of parasites he or she has. If you wish to deworm your pup yourself, use the proper medication and repeat the dose in 2 weeks. Get your pup's proper weight too. But the danger in doing this is that maybe the pup is sick with something else. That is the reason for taking your pet in to be checked out by your Vet and don't forget to bring in a stool sample from your dog.

What do cats need?

Cats are carnivores, so they need fresh meat. They only need 3-5% carbohydrates (which would come from a prey's stomach), but the rest they get all their nutrition from meat, organs and bone.

In general, the best cat foods are the ones with a very high, named-meat content. They should be labeled by source, such as: Chicken, Turkey, Rabbit, Lamb, Tuna, etc., as the first, or second ingredient. Cats need the majority of their nutrients from meat-based proteins and fats.

The amount of moisture in cat food is also very important, if not one of the most important part of a cat's diet. Dry food contains no moisture, so is quite dehydrating. Cats are notoriously bad drinkers, even when they are thirsty. This is because they have evolved to get all their needed moisture from their prey (their ancestors were cats that lived in very dry and arid environments where water was hard to come by), so therefore have a low "thirst drive" and will not often seek out water on their own. This is a trait that has been passed down over the thousands of years.

Canned or pouched food has anywhere between 60 to 80% water. Seeing as in the wild a cat's prey is around 65%-75% water, wet food provides a cat with more than enough water each day.

Can a human get a heartworm from a dog?

Humans can get infected with heartworms, but because they are an "aberrant host" the parasite doesn't reach the heart and mature. Typically a heartworm larva dies shortly after entering the human body through a mosquito bite, but occasionally they will migrate all the way to the lungs before they die. Heartworm infection in humans is rare.

How do you get rid of worms without seeing a doctor?

How you get rid of worms depends greatly upon what kind of worms you think you or your pet may have.

Pinworms are found only in humans and account for the largest percentage of intestinal worm infections in the U.S. Getting rid of pinworm isn't easy, but it can be done. To get rid of pinworms, you should wash your hands regularly to avoid ingesting pinworm eggs. If pinworm infection is detected by your doctor, or noticed in the stool, you should seek an over-the-counter treatment like Reese's Pinworm Medicine or get a prescription from your doctor for Vermox, the most common prescription given for pinworm infections.

What can you put on cats skin to heal scabs from flea bits?

Do you know how your cat got the scabs on his head? This could be a result of a poxvirus which has to be treated with medication. It could also be a fungal or bacterial infection. I think you need to determine the cause before applying a treatment, so a trip to the vet may be necessary.

How do you remove a tick that is in your dogs head?

  • Step 1.) Wear latex gloves to protect yourself. Use a pair of tweezers or a specially-designed tick removal tool to grasp the tick at the point of attachment. This should be done as close to the skin as possible. Step 2.) Be very careful not to squeeze the body of the tick, as this may cause bacteria and disease containing materials to be injected into the site. Step 3.) Pull the tick straight out from the skin slowly and steadily (without twisting or turning). Some of your dog's skin may come off with the tick, but this is normal. If bleeding occurs, apply light pressure to the area. Step 4.) Once removed, the tick should be handled carefully. While some people prefer to flush ticks down the toilet, saving the tick for further identification is a good idea. Place the tick in a small airtight container (like a pill vial or jar). You may wish to add some rubbing alcohol to the container. Label the container with the date and store in case future illness occurs, as identification may become necessary. Step 5.) If part of the tick's head still appears to be embedded, use the tweezers to gently pull it out. If some of the head cannot be removed, do not become alarmed. This should fall off eventually and rarely causes complications. Step 6.) After tick removal, clean your dog's skin at the bite area with mild soap and water. Watch this spot for several days in case of further irritation or infection. If the area does not clear up in a few days, contact your veterinarian. *NOTE: There are really no shortcuts that can make a tick release itself from its host - a tick will not voluntarily detach until its meal is complete. DO NOT apply hot matches, nail polish, petroleum jelly, alcohol or other chemicals to the site. These methods are not affective and can actually be harmful to your dog.
  • Cover the tick with oil or Vaseline. It won't be able to breath and will back out and let go. This is the safest way to insure that there are no bug parts left in the dog.
  • It's the head of the tick you have to be concerned about. We get them in Canada and I've only had to remove a tick once. The oil didn't work so I phoned the vet and she said to take tweezers and very carefully pull the tick straight out (don't twist clock-wise as previously advised) and it's a two man job because it will be slightly painful for the dog. After the tick is out be sure the head is attached and if not take your dog to the vet immediately. If it is then bathe the dog's small wound with a mild disinfectant.
  • My neighbor (an ex-vet nurse) used a piece of cotton wool, well soaked in nail polish remover and rubbed the tic gently all over. It took about a minute or so for the tic to get loose and drop off. We then rinsed the area with luke warm water and the dog was fine throughout the whole procedure (no pain) and afterwards (no infection/irritation).
  • I just used WD40 on a cotton swab to remove a tick from my 3 lb Chihauhau. I gently placed the damp swab on top of the partially exposed tail end of the tick and after about 2 minutes it backed itself completely out, head and all.

What is the cause for your indoor dog getting worms?

The dog can also get it if he eats the excrement of another infected animal. The best prevention would be a good flea prevention and cleaning up the yard (or area where you walk him).

What happens if you give a dog too much wormer?

Based on my own recent experience with my dog, she was very restless. She wouldn't lay down or go to sleep under the blankets, she kept getting up and pacing around. She shook and wouldn't come to any of us in the house. She wouldn't take part in any of her favorite activities. Overall she was being very uncharacteristic and very wired. I hope this was of some help.

Will worms leave a dog naturally?

Once a dog or any animal for that matter has been infected with internal parasites then no they cannot pass them normally. You need to deworm your dog. Take a sample of his or her feces into your Veterinarian to see what types of worms she or he has. Then deworm for whatever types of parasites the dog has. Be sure to repeat the deworming process again in 10-14 days.
