How many centuries has anorexia nervosa been around for?

Anorexia has only been a diagnosed disorder since the late 1800s, but written descriptions of people who might have suffered from anorexia date back to ancient times.

Priest reports state that Catherine of Sienna existed on a diet of next-to-nothing, consiting of only small amounts of fruits and berries.

Ancient Romans practiced habits of starvation and purging after meals, signs of the eating disorders of anorexia and bulimia.

Any good pro ana sites?

I'm sorry, but WikiAnswers is meant to be a place where questions are answered that are there to help or educate or assist a person. Suggesting a website that encourages anorexia (a potentially fatal and life-endangering disease) would not be helping, but would be promoting this dangerous life style.

What is liability of personal trainer and anorexic?

If the personal trainer is aware of the anorexia in his or her client, and continues to help them lose significant weight, they might be able to be held liable in the way that they are enabling the disorder and might be worsening the condition. Who suffers the most with an eating disorder parents or the person who has the disorder?

It depends on the case weather or not if affects the parents and how much it affects them. In most cases though I'd say the person with the disorder suffers far more.

If you turn anorexic how long does it take before you turn slim also how many calories a day does the average anorexic person consume?

A real look at the question itself.

Anorexia is not the state of being dangerously slim. It is the state of irrationally wanting to avoid food in order to be slim. It's a personality disorder that hasn't actually got much to do with how fat or not you are and much more to do with how fat you don't want to be. It usually leads to being dangerously slim but that itself is not called anorexia, it's called starvation.

In that case, I think you may yourself already have this problem if you are not just asking this for the sake of education. If you're wondering why I haven't given you an answer to the first part of the question, it's because it differs depending on how much you weigh when you start fasting and how quickly your metabolism reacts. Wikipedia says that the average anorexic person consumes 800 calories a day but there are several documented cases of people fasting for 30 days or more on just water (see Olivia Cohen, David Blaine etc). The heath effects are dramatic and lasting, and many many months or years after the subject may still be overeating to compensate for a greatly increased appetite from excess gall and ghrelin (digestion acids that trigger hunger) in their system and nutrient losses.

What is the difference between heart disease and anorexia nervosa?

Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder where a person staves themselves and works out excessively so as not to gain weight. It can cause a multitude of health problems, including heart conditions and / or heart failure.

Heart disease can be caused by a number of things, including genetics, smoking, obesity, lack of exercise, and poor / unhealthy eating habits. There are different forms that can affect different people in different ways.

If you have been running about 15 miles a week for one week is it common to gain some weight at first but eventually start losing weight?

yes the extra weight you gained is just muscle...

your legs are burning fat and gaining muscle. you'll lose size in your thighs and whatnot, but the "weight" you're gaining is muscle (which weighs much more than fat). try not to judge your body by the number displayed on the scale. try measuring your thighs once a month or something. i promise they'll get smaller, and then they might actually grow in size a little but they will be toned and firm

Why is it that when you starve yourself for a while - a week or so - you only lose 3 to 5 pounds when you want to lose more?

There are thousands of calories in a pound, so even if you skip a whole weeks calories its difficult to lose too much weight. Additionally, by starving yourself you slow down metabolism and slow the weight loss process more. If you wanna lose more weight, take the time to do diet and exercise and give yourself weeks, not days, to lose pounds.

What important considerations have to be taken into anorexia?

There are many important things to consider about anorexia. It all depends on what you are trying to focus on. Some crucial or important things to consider in all aspects are....

* Anorexia is both a physical and mental disorder.

* Anorexia is very sensitive to the person.

* Strict or harsh / assertive actions will almost always backfire.

* Anorexics will go to almost any length to lose weight / avoid calories and food.

* Anorexia can cause serious health problems.

* 10% of all anorexia cases are fatal (as a direct result of the disorder).

* Anorexia is often kept secret or hidden for a long time.

* Just because someone is anorexic does not always mean they are severly underweight or skin-and-bones.

How can you turn anorexic quickly should you start by starving and then throwing up?

You can not "turn" anorexic, it is a disease not a diet. Please don't even try go down that path and involve yourself in anorexic behaviors. It is not worth it. Do you want to be a walking zombie? I'm not even a stick yet but my hair is falling out my teeth are horrible I have no energy bags under my eyes horrible nails and lots of other things and I'm not even at my goal weight yet. I can hardly make it through training. I almost pass it every time. It is not worth it.

You are beautiful just the way you are and don't let anyway tell you otherwise.

(ps throwing up is more of a bulimic behavior.)

Can anorexia nervosa be a sign of family problems?

In some families, a daughter's eating disorder serves as a distraction from marital discord or other family tensions

If you are 5' 5 and 142.5 lbs how much weight will you lose - and how soon will you start losing - if you eat only one fruit or vegetable every 4 or five days?

First i know you wanted an awnser but i don't no that, but i just thought i would warn you. if you only eat one fruit/veg then that could be dangerous and you could end up in hospital i think if your trying to llosse weight the best bet is to still eat three meals a day, but add vegtables in the meals, and try and eat at leat 5 portions of fruit and veg also doing activites outside like football, rugby, rounders ect that could also help.

Just want to say at 5.5 and 142 pounds you are still within the healthy BMI - just make sure that you eat at least 1500 cal a day and the secret to losing is burning more than you eat - ...

Just do it slowly..

-

Ok i have another answer because I'm pretty sure you will have heard alot of that 'just eat three balanced meals...' bla bla stuff already. The truth is though that if you starve yourself like that your body will go into starvation mode so when you do eat something your body will take all the fat in that it can just to stop you from dying! And of course then you'll just gain weight and feel terrible and un-energetic.

If you have a problem with your eating you should go to a dietician. They can be really helpful and then you won't have to worry about your weight. :)

If you are 17 years old and 170 pounds how long would you have to starve yourself to lose 50 pounds?

Don't starve yourself! Here's a tip, eat slowly... How? Eat all of your food with chopsticks. Budget your food so that you can only finish after fifteen minutes from the time you started your meal. Eat only three times a day, with the food amounting only to two cups per meal. If you're hungry, and it's not yet time to eat, drink protein or fruit shakes, make it at home, and don't put bags of sugar, put only three in one glass. Or better yet, substitute sugar with honey, so that you can have no limits. One more thing, one glass of water before you eat, drink it slowly. Drink water after four bites of food while you're eating. It's more advisable to substitute water with fruit juices, just make it yourself, don't add sugar, just honey. That's that.. And if you ask, I'm not a doctor, thank you very much... You might lose all that weight for about three weeks or so, less if you exercise. But to be honest, I don't like to exercise. All I can say is that I think you don't need to lose the pounds, what is your height? I'm just fifteen, and I'm from the Philippines...

If you are called fat and now youre scared to eat are you anorexic?

No. It is natural not to want to eat after being called fat, but soon enough the feeling passes. It is important not to care what others say about you, especially when it is negative or rude. Anorexia is when people do not eat much at all for long, extended periods of time and exercise a lot to lose weight. It also involves a complicated and unhealthy relationship with food and many health problems, too.

I am too nervous to eat.Am i anorexic?

Are you losing weight? Do people tell you are underweight, but you still think you are fat? Do you obsess about being too heavy? Do you force yourself to regurgitate food?

If not, you are most likely not anorexic. We cannot comment on the "too nervous to eat" issue, because you did not mention how long you have been that way, how much you are able to eat, what you are "nervous" about, and a variety of other factors.

However, if you feel you are unable to eat normally, we suggest speaking with a therapist who can help you sort out the reasons. Check with your local Mental Health Association for referrals, or look online for those in your area who work with eating disorders. DON'T just go to your family doctor and get some pills. That is not the answer.

How long does it take to die if you eat small amounts?

Not eating sufficiently is a sign of the eating disorder known as anorexia nervosa. It will take a long time to die, per say, as the body will begin to metabolize fat and muscle. But it is very dangerous and unhealthy to do so.
