The South African Nationalist government of 1948 passed the first laws about Apartheid. This affected every level of society. What is the difference between the Holocaust and apartheid?

I'm also wondering difference of those two cuz I met one holocaust survivor today and she said holocaust and the shoah is kinda different

-------------------------------------

Shoah is the word that the Jews use for the attempted extermination of the Jews by the Nazis. This word is used in preference to the word Holocaust for three main reasons:

The Holocaust is used by many to describe all of the victims of Nazi extermination policies.

The definition of Holocaust implies sacrifice and many Jews consider this inappropriate as there was no sacrifice involved.

The word (or term) Holocaust is currently being hijacked by many other people resulting in it's meaning being eliminated, for example 'Animal Holocaust or African Holocaust or 'Today's Holocaust'. Or 'motorway Holocaust' just to describe a car crash, which obviously is almost the same as the Holocaust.

Who agreed to the apartheid?

its not about agreeing; i believe its about standing for they believe in. their mother land taken by white supermacist to decide where/who/and how it gets used and who occupy it. u see this going on all over the our nation the white gov't did it to the hawaiian race; our civil war; th revolution; this is all about the white race deciding with the help or no help but maybe intervention by the federal gov't if it gets out of hand to realize there will be resistance. its like coup groups in foreign country the U.S. gov't steps in when to much people are getting killed. this whole thing is mandela got locked-up, he and other black leaders in so. africa could rally the people in s. africa and that would of been a massacre. it makes me proud to understand other cultures and how they stand-up to the gov't and fight and believe.

How was apartheid created and dissolved in South Africa?

Apartheid began in 1948 even though racism was around for a lot longer. In 1950 there was the Population Registration Act which labeled everyone as white, black, colored, or Asian. Lass were passed t prevent marriages between groups. Eighty percent of the land was reserved for the white minority and nonwhites had to carry documents to travel outside of their designated area. Land was taken from blacks and sold at low prices to white farmers. Groups like the ANC (African National Congress) opposed the white government. Nelson Mandela was one of that group and he was imprisoned fro 1963 to 1990.

Apartheid was opposed by the United Nations. The United States and United Kingdom placed economic sanctions on South Africa. Finally whites began changing policies starting with repealing some of of these laws relating to interracial sex and marriage. F.W. de Klerk took over in 1989 and he repealed the Population Registration Act. In 1990, de Klerk released Nelson Mandela. Mandela and de Klerk worked together to write a new Constitution that went into effect in 1994.

The anti-apartheid movement involved many countries around the world that agreed to stop trading with South Africa to persuade them to stop Aparthied, while the Civil Right movement involved only one country (the United States). This is only one reason, and I'm sure there are more, but hope this helps a little!
