How can you recharge the Ac in a 1996 Audi a4 quattro?
The 1996 A4 Quattro only has a "high side" refrigerant port. It is located on the (right) side of the radiator ((left if you are viewing from the front - look for the refrigerant lines going in to the exchanger).
With a single port, you must evacuate the entire system and replace the refrigerant with the proper amount. Adding from the cans available at the auto parts stores will not work on the high side.
What I did was to get a low presure pipe with the valve in the junker, cut the valve leaving 1-1/2" of pipe in both sides of the valve, then I open the pipe in half, make a hole in the low pressure pipe and clamp the low valve with hose clamps, I use a rubber hose as a seal. recharge system and done. Works perfect.

Actually, I JUST had this issue with my Audi A4. I removed the fuse (#39 in my car, but should be listed in your owners manual or on the inside of the fuse panel -- labeled: radio). The Fuse panel is on the drivers side and pops right off with a Flathead screw driver or something of the sorts. According to other websites and forum threads, this problem will persist in the future, but it honestly took all of 60 seconds to fix.

There is a unit that has 2 screws that need to be removed in order to get to the filter. once the screws are removed pry the two haves open and you will see a small "V" shaped mesh filter and under that is the rectangle air filter. It will take a little bit of tugging to get it out.

If it is not working, make sure you are in the "on" position, two clicks and not to start. Also make sure you gave your car enough off time.

Why is there white smoke coming out of your exhaust?
Transmission fluid can be sucked into your oil if the modulator valve fails on the transmission, and this may present as white smoke upon acceleration. A modulator valve is mounted on the side of a transmission and is hooked to a vacuum line that is connected to the engine. If the diaphragm in the valve ruptures then you end up sucking transmission fluid via the vacuum line into the engine. If not repaired promptly you can very easily double the volume of "oil" in your engine as the transmission fluid mixes with the oil. A simple test is to disconnect the vacuum line that runs down to your transmission and if it is filled with trans fluid the diaphragm in the valve has ruptured. A modulator runs less than $20 and takes about ten minutes to replace (if you can get at it). On some vehicles there is an access plate cut into the transmission hump (under the carpeting) that allows you to access it from within the interior of the vehicle. 1994 Mazda B3000 for example.

This is a fairly easy job in comparison to doing the front struts. if you remove the side covers on the rear seats (both sides) you will see two bolts and a plastic looking retainer cap. This cap is tricky for if you attempt to pull it out with out separating it from the strut you are bond to break pieces of it leaving a terrible rattle until you do replace it. here are the steps i took.
#1 break loose the lugs
#2 engage the E-Brake
#3 secure A4 with jack stand
#4 Remove lugs and rim
#5 One large 17mm nut (I think) bolt head faces inside remove this bolt (will need an open end wrench to keep the other side of bolt from spinning)
#6 Remove leather seat cover (medium size padding door closes on it)
#7 look for 2x13mm bolts (mentioned earlier in answer)
#8 loosen plastic mount cover from strut (This will expose tension lug keeping the strut together)
#9 (DO NOT LOOSEN THE RETAINER BOLT LOCATED ON TOP OF THE STRUT!!!!!!!!) Under lots on pressure and will hurt or kill someone!!!!
#10 Rent or buy spring compressor tool (Rent it you will get your money back :)
#11 With the spring compressor kit torque spring until tensions is relived.
#12 It is now safe to remove the bolt on top of the strut( Tension Bolt)
#13 Install in reverse
