What does the term outback refer to in Australia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

To Australians, the outback epitomises the free, open, country life. There seem to be no restrictions to the continuous wide, open spaces, and when you are in the outback there's a good chance that, unless you're on the major highways, you can travel for hours without meeting another car. Australia is a vast country, with huge tracts of unoccupied, dry land, which is the outback. It is its geography which makes it "the outback". However, the cities, towns and beaches also comprise a large proportion of Australia.

Which countries use vegemite?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

All countries. The rumor was that the US FDA banned Vegemite because it contains folic acid, which according to the rumor was only allowed to be found in breads and cereals. I note the message doesn't say spinach was also banned by the FDA under the same theory. Spinach is full of the stuff. Anyway, the FDA says they never banned Vegemite. (If they would have banned it, it wouldn't have been on grounds of "folate supplementation" because the folic acid in Vegemite gets there naturally, it would have been because it's made from industrial waste--the layer of used yeast at the bottom of a lager aging vat.

What are some traditional food dishes in Australia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

In general, Australians have the same diet as people in other Western nations such as the US. The culture is diverse, and this is reflected in the cuisine.

Barbecues and a relaxed style of entertaining, favoring an abundance of salads and fresh produce which are available year round in Australia's climate. The major fast food chains as found in other countries around the world are well patronised too, by both young and old.

There are a couple of dishes that Australians have on occasion that may not be familiar. One is Pavlova, a dessert of fruit and cream served on a meringue case. Another popular morning tea snack food is lamington, a sponge cake covered with melted chocolate and dipped in desiccated coconut. Lamingtons may be served as small square blocks, or in a large round cake, sometimes with a jam and cream layer.

A staple food from the past is damper, a simple bread made from flour, salt and water and baked in the coals of a fire. A traditional "bush" food, it is now usually reserved for fun when out camping or around a campfire on the beach or in a park.

Even the indigenous Australians on the whole do not eat their traditional foods as a staple diet. Bush foods, such as wattle (acacia) seeds and witchetty grubs, have become a delicacy available in top restaurants but are not in mainstream consumption.

Australians are very multicultural; they eat a lot of different foods. Australians are some of the largest consumers of meat in the world and the quality is extremely high. Meats consist mainly of beef, lamb, chicken and pork. There is a large variety of vegetables available, as well as potatoes and rice. Sea food is more expensive but nevertheless widely used by most Australians. Other foods include:pastas, pastries, fresh fruits & vegetables. Australians like other cultural foods such as Chinese, Thai, Italian, Mexican and so on. They also enjoy the good old British fish and chips, and meat pies.

Kangaroo meat has become readily available in supermarkets, but for most Australians, it is not part of their everyday fare. It is an acquired taste, and only a small percentage of Australians have acquired that taste ...

What is the main meal in Australia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

When Australia was first settled, the most common foods were beef and mutton, which is the cut of an older sheep (definitely not lamb). Mutton stew was one of the most common foods. Because Australia was "built on the sheep's back", lamb soon became one of the more common foods, traditionally served as a Sunday roast.

In modern times, the trend has moved away from lamb, with beef and pork being more popular, and chicken the most popular of all. However, sales of lamb for Australia Day celebrations still remain high, so people do tend to associate lamb with Australia.

The food most considered "traditional" in Australia now is anything barbequed - steak, sausages, chops, roasts, etc.

What kind of meat do they eat in Australia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Australia has the same meats any other country has.Australia raises beef, sheep, pigs chickens goats

with the different ethnics in the population there are sausages etc from all over the world.

so ya can pretty much get anything you want

Most Australians eat a lot of beef and chicken. Large parts of Australia are dedicated to grazing cattle and grass fed beef is cheap and available. Most of Australia's sheep are for wool production but lamb is also readily available; mutton is not but it is sometimes sold as lamb. Turkey is more expensive, but if you can afford it it is widely available. Pork is mostly more expensive than beef, but we eat that too. Kangaroo meat is very cheap and available. Kangaroos are considered pests in some areas. Because we irrigate areas that were never able to support large grazing animals before white settlement, kangaroo populations have exploded. The roos now eat everything and sometimes breed and eat until they are all in danger of starving. Large culls are required to keep them from a horrible death but the bodies are not left to rot - they are used for pet food, human consumption and leather. Kangaroo meat is very tender, low in fat and it tastes good too, but some Australians don't like to eat it because they like kangaroos too much.

Fish is also eaten, mainly saltwater fish but some freshwater fish as well. Barramundi is a favourite angling fish and tastes very good. Mackeral, bream and red emperor are other popular eating fish.

Specialty meats such as venison (deer) and game birds are available but you can't just buy them in the average supermarket. They are usually hard to find and very expensive. Hunting is permitted in some parts of Australia, but a lot of the wildlife is protected and the gun laws are very strict. You are mostly allowed to catch and eat your own fish, but limits apply to prevent overfishing.
