What is photography noise?

Noise in photography can be either visible "grain" in the prints when using faster films, or visible pixels when the ISO speed of the sensor is boosted. Noise can interfere with sharpness/resolution. Sometimes noise appears as color "fringing" or "haloing" around bright objects, which can occur in either film or digital cameras. Some photographers work to reduce or eliminate all noise; others embrace it.

Noise is not all bad. Grain or pixels make the image. If you're a "high rez" freak, keep your ISO low and opt for a tripod where possible. You may even choose to work in a larger format (Ansel Adams, the Dean of no-noise photography, made many of his most famous pictures with an 8x10-inch view camera). But if you're a hand-held camera-in-your-pocket available light freak (like me), don't be afraid to load 400 speed or higher, or boost the ISO on your sensor, and accept some grain or noise as the price of getting the picture.

How much should you charge for photography of an event for 550 people on New Year's Eve?

it depends on whether people have asked you to be there or if your being invited and your are "conveniently" taking your camera. if your just going to stick the photo's on a disk for separate people than charge a small, pathetic fee of about £5-£6. i did this at someone's engagement party and walked away with a small fortune. on the flip side, if someone has asked you to be there and said they will pay you, you will have to break everything down accordingly. i.e. cost of materials etc.

if i were to do this then i would say to the organizer, £10 per hour for me being there just taking pictures. this acts as a fail safe or guarantee that if people don't buy your pictures your sure to walk away with something for your efforts. However, if people do decide to purchase something from you, research how much your printing costs are going to be. again using myself as an example my an A4 glossy finish photo will cost me around 90p. i will want to make a small profit on this so i say £1.50 for the whole A4. because its cheap the original person/ people you sold the picture to will contact/get in touch with the others that will want to buy either a CD or an A4 print. again this varies to you as your resources are going to differ to mine. i don't normally do parties just private sittings for families and friends when they want them. its not a job just something that is available to people if they want something like this. hope this has helped

Which one much better in freelancer photography or studio photography?

It really depends on what you are looking to do. Freelancers sometimes have studios so they can work out of there when need be. Not having a studio means a lower overhead but it also means everything needs to be shot "on-location" or that you need to find locations to shoot everything. Not having a studio is really a matter of choice - do you want the financial burden and do you want to to have to try to get your money's worth? Some cities have space that you can buy into that is shared and therefore cheaper. If you work in an area with very cold long winters a studio may be a good investment, if you live somewhere where studio space is expensive and the weather is good year round you may be better off to not buy or rent space. Other than that there is not much difference between someone who is a "studio photographer" and a "freelance photographer" There are people though that bill themselves as portrait photographers, wedding photographers, and those that call themselves commercial photographers that work exclusively B2B rather than B2C. Neither is "better" individuals have to choose between which they like more and what pays better in their area.

How do you load digital pictures from a floppy disc?

Put the disc in the computer with the small triangle going in tip-first on top. Go to your Desktop by minimizing all windows. Double click "My Computer" on the desktop. The floppy disc is the A: drive. So double click on "A:" or "A: 3 1/2 inch floppy", whichever it shows. Then just drag all of the files on the floppy disc onto the Desktop or another folder.

Can a hotel prevent theft by using web cameras?

No, a camera will not "prevent" theft anywhere. A camera might slightly deter theft (even if a dummy camera), assist in prosecution of a suspected thief, or even help trigger an alarm, but it will not prevent anything.

Why do you need to make test strips in photography?

To determine the proper exposure when making prints. Test strips allow you to determine the tonal range of the print at multiple levels of exposure.

How do you get your shutter speed to slow down because when I do that the aperture won't work and it makes a dark picture and it won't let me go past a certain shutter speed limit on Nikon 42X P510?

When using a Nikon 42x P510 camera it is very easy to slow down the shutter speed. On the side of the camera there is a dial that you can access to slow or speed up the shutter speed.

What is the meaning of the 'HDR technique' in photography?

HDR (High Dynamic Range) is a Photoshop feature that blends several digital images into one to create a final photo which has a tonal range that could not be achieved by ordinary picture taking. Where a scene has a large tonal range (deep shadow, bright highlights and often lots in between) a typical approach will usually result in image "noise " in the dark areas and/or highlights that are blown out. This is because the contrast ratio your eyes can deal with far surpasses the capability of film or digital cameras.

At least 3 (5 is better) exposures are taken so that there is detail in the shadow area in the first, bracketing upwards (increasing exposure) by 1 stop per successive shot, being careful not to blow out the highlights. The scene must be static (moving trees or waves are not suitable) and the camera held in the same position for each shot, thus a sturdy tripod is essential. A shutter release cable or shutter timer is advisable.

Learning to "see" as your camera and/or film sees is important to achieving more success in your photography.

See the discussion page for another viewpoint, which IMHO is not 100% accurate.

What year was the photograph invented?

1839, although temporary photographs that disappeared after a time were able to be produced prior to that (ca. 1820's)

How does red eye happen on a camera?

"If an eye had absorbed all light, then this wouldn't happen. In fact, if an eye had been theoretically flawless, the red eye effect would not have existed at all. What happens when you see the red eyes on pictures, is that the flash is reflected in someone's eye. The reflection is red because of all the blood vessels inside the eye."

What impact did the invention of the camera influence the world of 2 dimensional art?

The beginning of modern photojournalism took place in 1925, in Germany. The event was the invention of the first 35 mm camera, the Leica. It was designed as a way to use surplus movie film, then shot in the 35 mm format. Before this, a photo of professional quality required bulky equipment; after this photographers could go just about anywhere and take photos unobtrusively, without bulky lights or tripods. The difference was dramatic, for primarily posed photos, with people award of the photographer's presence, to new, natural photos of people as they really lived.

Added to this was another invention originally from Germany, the photojournalism magazine. From the mid-1920s, Germany, at first, experimented with the combination of two old ideas. Old was the direct publication of photos; that was available after about 1890, and by the early 20th century, some publications, newspaper-style and magazine, were devoted primarily to illustrations. But the difference of photo magazines beginning in the 1920s was the collaboration--instead of isolated photos, laid out like in your photo album, editors and photographers begin to work together to produce an actual story told by pictures and words, or cutlines. In this concept, photographers would shoot many more photos than they needed, and transfer them to editors. Editors would examine contact sheets, that is, sheets with all the photos on them in miniature form (now done using Photoshop software), and choose those he or she best believed told the story. As important in the new photojournalism style was the layout and writing. Cutlines, or captions, helped tell the story along with the photos, guiding the reader through the illustrations, and photos were no longer published like a family album, or individually, just to illustrate a story. The written story was kept to a minimum, and the one, dominant, theme-setting photo would be published larger, while others would help reinforce this theme.

The combination of photography and journalism, or photojournalism--a term coined by Frank Luther Mott, historian and dean of the University of Missouri School of Journalism--really became familiar after World War II (1939-1945). Germany's photo magazines established the concept, but Hitler's rise to power in 1933 led to suppression and persecution of most of the editors, who generally fled the country. Many came to the United States.

What is matted photography?

You could be referring to the type of paper used to print the picture on, but it is spelled "matte". The other commonly used paper type is glossy.

Matte is not as shiny as gloss, so it does not reproduce colours as vibrantly as glossy paper, but it is less prone to finger prints or scratches. Also, matte paper reproduces less glare than glossy paper, which makes it easier to view. Its textured finish makes it more artistic looking, thus it is more suitable for portraits

On the other hand, you could be referring to a photo that has a thin, flat paper based "frame" around it whose opening has bevelled edges. This is known as a "mat" and serves to separate the photo or artwork from the glass covering as well as enhance the viewing experience with complementary (not complimentary) mat colors.
