At the simplest, there are two steps;

1. Boil water

2. Collect the steam

In practice, there is a little more to it. It is difficult to collect water vapor, or steam; it is much easier to collect liquid water, so you will need a way to change the water vapor back into liquid water. You do that by condensing the steam back into water.

This turns out to be pretty easy to do; water vapor will condense into liquid on the outside of a cold glass if there is ANY water vapor in the air, as everybody who has held a cold drink on a hot day already knows.

If you are out camping, it is easy to make a "solar still" and get clean, fresh water from any kind of damp muck. Dig a pit in the ground about 18 inches deep where the sun can shine on it. Put any sort of damp material - green leaves, mud, dirty water, almost anything wet - and put it in the hole. Place a clean empty container such as a metal pot or bowl in the middle of the pit. Cover the pit with a plastic sheet; a tarp, a plastic trash bag, something to cover the entire pit. It doesn't have to be airtight or watertight. Place a small stone in the plastic sheet right over the pot.

The sun will shine into the pit and heat up the wet stuff in the pit. Some of the water will evaporate. The vapor will hit the plastic sheet, and condense, and run down to the bottom point in the sheet where the stone is, and fresh water will drip into the pot.

If the goal is to collect the salt, that's even easier; put a shallow pan of salt water in a the sun. Wait until tomorrow. The salt will remain, while the water will have evaporated.

The light is primarily absorbed by your clothing (or skin) and turned into heat. The only difference is that when held closely against you, the light from the the flash-light doesn't scatter, and is concentrated in a small area.

The light that is reflected from your body surface back towards the bulb hits the reflector and bounces back onto your body. Due to losses in the bulb, glass and reflector, all of the light is converted to heat at some point, some in your clothing or body surface, and some in the flash-light.

With a strong enough flash-light, you can feel heat absorbed through your clothing.

Wrap the handkerchief around the plastic tube and secure it with the elastic bands. Stick one end of the tube into the spout of the kettle. If it's not a snug fit use the edge of the handkerchief to pack the gap. If the tube is long enough, let some of it lay slack in the pan and place the other end of the tube over the cup. Fill the pan with cool water and also wet the handkerchief. If possible, let one edge to the handkerchief contact the cool water in the pan. Fill the kettle with salt water and place it on the stove. Use a match to light the stove and bring the salt water to a boil. Steam will travel through the tube and condense when it is cooled by the wet handkerchief and/or the cool water in the pan. The condensate will continue down the tube into the cup.

Now try the same thing with beer instead of salt water. Yeeeeeeee Haw!

If you are refering to the caravans as the conestoga wagons then it is because cloth was naturally white to a dull grey. There would be no reason to dye them especially as this would have been expensive. Also white reflects sunlight and would keep the wagon cooler in the summer. If you mean Dodge caravans the mini van, there are a lot of them that are purchased as company or fleet vehicles and white is the least expensive color there is.
