When doing cardio do you burn muscle before fat?

No. Your body prefers to burn the macronutrients in the following order: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Therefore, if you have carbohydrates available in your bloodstream when you do cardio that is what you will burn first. When digested, all carbohydrates become sugar. This is why (if you are using cardio to lose body fat) the best time to do it is before breakfast when you have been fasting overnight. As your body depletes the glucose in your bloodstream after about 20 minutes, it will turn to burning fat, which is what you want.

What is the best form of exercise for a 62-year-old man?

It depends what you are used to doing. The simplest (and cheapest) forms of exercise for anyone who is not used to it are walking and swimming. Walking is free, just make sure you are wearing good shoes as it can affect the joints etc and pounding pavement can make things like arthritis worse. If you have arthritis swimming takes the weight off the joints but still gives you a good workout. The only downside is you have to show your body, however many pools have specific 'Senior Swim' times, so you are all in the same boat.

Do you burn more calories running 5 miles in 40 minutes vs 60 minutes?

It usually comes down to whatever is harder. If you run 5 miles in 40 minutes and give it everything you have, you burn a lot more calories than you do walking for 60 minutes.

Just another tidbit, Sprinting burns a lot more calories than long distance running. Sprinters can be burning calories up to 3 days after a workout.

The faster you run, the harder it is so therefore the more calories you burn so you would burn more calories running 5 miles in 40 minutes vs pacing yourself and doing it in 60

What is the diet after having heller's cardio-myotomy to treat achalasia?

Although I'm not a medical professional, I had the Cardio-myotomy with a toupe fundoplication performed in September of 2006. From my own experience, I can give you an idea of what to expect. The diet started out liquid only for the first day. I could tolerate milk like consistancy, and drank milk, tea, broth. To boost the caloric intake up, the hospital would bring me ice cream. Upon getting home, the first week was spent eating baby food consistancy food. Pureed sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, soups without chunks of anykinds. I would also supplement my meals with Ensure. The few times I tried to eat something more thick, I'd regret it immediately. The food would get stuck (which in itself was painful) and eventually I would get hicups. More often than not, I'd throw away the food that caused the offense, rather than tempt myself to eat it again. In other words, buy a good blender...you'll use it. To give you an idea, I lost 18 pounds over the three weeks after the surgery. Thankfully, those pounds will slowly come back as you learn to eat more food. Good luck
