I would check the keyswitch first. You might use a test light or volt meter to make sure voltage is still getting to the coil when the keyswitch is in the "on" position. Many vehicles of that vintage had 2 circuits in the keyswitch that would run the coil. One was wired to give direct 12 volts for startup operation, the other circuit would provide lower voltage for normal operation. It could be that the startup circuit is still good in the keyswitch and the run time circuit has failed.

have you changed his food lately? is he indoor or outdoor cat? he might be snacking at the neighbor's house maybe? my experience is that cat has smelly gas when he was on a weight loss vet food - it probably had extra bulk fiber in it to make him feel full and therefore he had smelly gas. I can't tell when you posted your question - hopefully your cat is fine and happy now.
