Cat Maintenance

Cat maintenance focuses on the hair and claws of the cat. Combing a cat’s fur is an excellent way of getting rid of hair balls and checking for fleas. One should provide a scratching post to keep the cat's nails trimmed.

What food and how much food would a 6 week old kitten eat?

It depends on a lot of things.

Firstly, it depends what brand of food you're feeding. Check the guidelines on the back of the bag, box or can. Most if not all packages of cat or kitten food will include feeding guidelines. For adult cats, these are based on weight. For kittens, they are usually based on both weight and age but sometimes just age.

In general, if you're feeding a food that is formulated for "all life stages" or "kittens and cats" you will have to feed a kitten more than you would if you were feeding a diet specially formulated for just kittens.

Match the age and/or weight of your kitten to the recommended feeding portions. If your kitten seems underweight (ie, you can easily see or feel ribs) you can up the portions. Remember, these are just feeding guidelines. As a general rule, kittens won't eat more than they need. A kitten should have a nice round tummy and feel weighty. If you think your kitten is overweight, consult your vet.

As an example, I feed my six month old kitten Wellness Kitten dry, and the recommended portions are 3/4 to one full cup of dry kibble daily. If she were also getting canned food, the recommended portions are 3/4 cup dry kibble and one 3oz can per day. Since she's got a small frame, she usually eats a little less than 3/4 of a cup daily.

Why do cats claw furniture?

Cats claw furniture usually because they haven't got any other adequate places for it sharpen its claws. Cats need to scratch in order to remove old layers of claw, and also to work the muscles in their feet, shoulders, legs and back.

Providing adequate scratching posts, or even activity trees with multiple scratching posts will usually stop a cat from scratching furniture, as many will naturally prefer posts to furniture.

Can you give your nursing cat a bath?

Yes, my cat is always getting into things and needing a bath. She absolutely hates it, but she puts up with it. They have sensitive systems and skin. The first time I washed my cat I used my dogs shampoo. She got very ill. It turned out the tea tree oil that helps my dogs skin was toxic to the cat. Be sure to pick up a shampoo made just for cats from the pet store to avoid any problems like that.

Ask your vet. We use a dog flea/tick shampoo on our cat and she has no ill effects from it. She's a very hardy domestic shorthair, though. Some breeds are less tolerant to enivronmental factors than others. As long as you THOROUGHLY rinse your cat out, to where no residue is left in the fur, she should do fine.

What is the height of a kitten?

Seeing as the term "Tabby" is coat pattern found on some cats (and in several breeds), the size and length of a tabby cat can be incredibly varied.

How much money is a kitten?

Depends. If you're going for a purebred, could be $1000 depending on breed. A mix breed house cat from a shelter could be about $50-$60. Of course, people are always giving them away for free- just check your local ads. Most places you buy an animal from will require that you have them fixed, or will have it fixed and charge you for it. Even if you get one for free, for the health and well being of the animal, for pete's sake get it fixed!

How often should kittens poop?

I just had this issue with my week old kitten that I have been hand-rearing. I got worried because he had been pooping a few times a day, a nice tooth-paste consistency which was perfect, but then didn't poop for 24 hours. When he finally pooped, the poop seemed backed up more and was much harder, though still soft by human poop standards. This was followed by some mild diarrhea. The next day, he still hadn't pooped again and his belly seemed full and slightly more firm than usual. I took him to the vet who said that this type of behavior is worrisome for a new kitten. Bowel problems can easily turn fatal. She expressed that a kitten should poop pretty consistently each time its bum is stimulated with a damp wipe (something the mother cat usually does with her tongue after each feeding, which should be every 2-3 hours). The kitten should perhaps not poop each time, but should go at least a few times a day. The vet ended up giving my kitty a shot of fluids, and sending me home with three more to administer over the next three days, hoping that hydrating him would help soften his stool.

As of yet, he still hasn't pooped again, but I'll continue to try every hour or so and hope that my little sweetie will hurry up and poop so I can feel better!

Do cats get fleas?

Can a cat be spayed while still in heat?

Yes, it is safe to spay a cat during its heat cycle. There is a very small risk of noticeable personality changes associated with this, but this is much lower than the risk of unwanted kittens from an intact.

There are more potential surgical complications because the reproductive tract is enlarged and much more vascular during an active heat cycle. Some of the potential complications include ovarian remnants being left, difficulty controlling bleeding due to increased blood flow through the area and risk of not adequately closing down the cervix. However, your veterinarian will be aware of these risks and take precautions as needed to address them. The healing time may also be slightly longer.

Do cats eat frogs?

Most likely, my dogs do. Frogs have a poison that seeps out of their backs...this causes the animal to not eat it, or vomit for awhile. So, if your cat if vomiting after this, its ok. But, if it continues and becomes more frequent....see the vet.

What do you start feeding kittens?

I recommend Cans of soft kitten food you should find on the pet section of your local grocery store. Or feed them small sections of hard cat food and some kitten food and smashing them together is good too so your cat can enjoy both.

Do spayed cats pee around the house?

There are a couple of answers as to why cats urinate around the house. In no particular order: they mark their territory; especially if another cat lives or has lived in your home. They do it out of protest. If you leave them in the care of someone else and they miss you, you can count on urine spots and possibly even feces. My final answer is you need to change the litter box more frequently. Praise kitty for using it; but keep it well cleaned frequently.

How can you tell between a female and male kitten?

Male cats have testicles. But, you can also tell by what colors a cat has. If it's a female it has 3 colors, a male has 2 or 1 color. But, some females have what I call a secret color which is when they have a little speckle ( which are unnoticeable in this case) and it has a different color. Always look again for a little spot you might have missed and it's hard to see a kitten's testicles. I know a cat who gave birth to a kitten that has a little unnoticeable orange spot. T hat's how you tell a female and male apart.

How much should feed cat?

Answer: IF YOUR Cat weighs from 8 - 12 pounds, here are my recommendations. If you want him to lose weight, feed him 3/4 of a cup a day. If you want him to maintain his weight, feed him 1 cup a day. If you want him to gain weight, feed him anything between 1 - 1 1/2 cups.

Answer:

To expand on the first answer, this really does depend on your cat, and what the quality of food is. Smaller, lighter cats will naturally eat less, whereas a bigger or bulky cat will eat more. That said, a cat will eat far more if fed a lower quality food to get the nutrition it needs, and less if fed a premium quality food.

The best way to find out how much you should feed YOUR cat is to keep an eye on his or her weight. You can do this by weighing him once a week to see if he gains or loses weight, or feeling for any extra layers of fat over his ribs. Be sure to consult a veterinarian first in order to find out the cat's weight and health.

How do you help dying 2 week old kittens?

It depends if you have the mother. If the mother is there the best advice is to LEAVE THEM BE!! Put them in a warm room, and give the mother all she needs (soft blankets, favorite food, lots of water.)

If you do not have the mother, you will need some sort of baby bottle to feed the infants, you will need to keep them very warm, and be there all the time to make sure they are okay. You can get all the necessary equipment from a vet or animal shelter. Animal shelters may even have a nursing cat that will be able to take on more kittens.

I got my babies with their mother, so I didn't touch them. They normally have their eyes closed the first week, and can NOT walk at all at first. Then they walk like little turtles and have weak little whimpers. I let their mommy tend to their needs, and now we have 5 extremely strong and healthy cats.

How much does a baby tabby cost?

A tabby cat is usually not a purebred cat, so could be free, or, very little money.

If you get a cat from an animal shelter or rescue agency, they will charge you a lot more, since they had the veterinarian examine the cat, and had to take care of it so they had costs to cover, but it would still be less money than getting a purebred cat. They would likely require you to get the cat neutered or spayed, and then they would give you some money back.

Why does the mom cat attack her kitten after the kitten was spayed?

A cat that is aggressive after being spayed may be experiencing post-operative pain. She may also be trying to adjust to the change in hormones. If the problem continues, have your vet check her for physical problems related to the spaying.

How do you declaw a cat?

Declawing is not a removal of the nails of a cat. Declawing surgery is actually the amputation of the first digit of each of the cat's toes. In human terms, it would be the equivalent of chopping off each finger tip at the first knuckle. This severs muscle and tendons which causes much pain and discomfort to the cat.

The procedure is often done with use of either a guillotine-type cutter, scalpel or laser, depending on the vet. The cat is often kept overnight to recover from the initial surgery.

How do you remove cat pee odor under the house?

No, that's not a good idea. Cats will walk in the lime and then lick their paws and it will kill them. There are all sorts of products in your pet store to use to deter cats from urinating under your house. You could also phone your vet (no cost) and they may recommend a good product for your problem.

How do you care for a newborn mouse with no mother?

A 2 week old mouse is still considered a baby - however properly determining the age of a mouse is easy. If the mouse has hair it can usually feed itself. Place food on the floor of the cage to allow easy access. Offer both hard, and soft food (soak hard food in water to make it soft) also keep food in the cage at all times along with water. If the mouse can not eat on its own get some kitten milk from a petstore, warm small portions of it and try feeding it with a dropper usually if they are over a week old they can lick the milk, try place a very small ammount of the milk in the cage be sure its not enough for it to drown! Make a nest for the mouse by tearing a dry papertowl up and placing it in the cage in a pile so the mouse can burrow and stay warm and feel safe.

AnswerA few days ago we got an orphan mouse. We feed the mouse every 2 hours with cow's milk and we warmed it with deluded water and fed it with a medicine dropper. That was our last resort because every pet store was closed. We finally got to a pet store that opened and got kitten formula. We drop the milk on our hands and the mouse licks it up. The mouse has no fur yet and it's eyes are shut. It's very spunky, and it loves snuggling into my hands. When we are not holding her in our hands, we put her in a shoe box with socks and toilet paper. We also have a light over her, but we leave a shady spot...just incase she gets too warm. Hope this helped!!!

ANSWER

If you are sure that it is two weeks old, feed it seeds. I took care of a two week old mouse, and I feed it seeds. It would be about the time that the mother would be feeding it seeds.
