This really depends what the cat has done. There are many things cat do that owners deem it as "misbehaving" that, to a cat, is completely natural and will not know certain actions are undesired. Sometimes, a cat will deliberately misbehave to get their owner's attention. Similarly, if a cat only gets attention when it misbehaves, it will just reinforce what it is doing is a good thing. Be sure to spend plenty of time with your cat when he's behaving; strokes, cuddles, playing all reinforce that good behaviour will get good rewards!

Firstly, giving your cat less food or putting it outside for the night will most likely not have any effect. A cat will not make the connection between misbehaving and getting put outside. Punishing a cat will just make it fearful or aggressive to its owner, certain doors or other objects.

Cats are clever creatures. The best way to deal with a cat is to prevent it from doing the unwanted act in the first place, and rewarding it when it behaves. If the cat is jumping onto surfaces, make those surfaces unpleasant for the cat; either spraying the surface with a citrus-based spray, or putting tin foil on the edges. Most cats do not like the texture of foil on their paws so will avoid it.

A simple, loud, "NO!" or "DOWN!" can work also. Swiftly removing the cat, shaking a metal tin filled with coins or spraying with water will help, but of course these have to be done ONLY when you catch the cat misbehaving. Any later and the cat will just associate you with loud noise.

If your cat is knocking things over - take the objects away or make it so the cat cannot reach them.

Scratching furniture/eliminating/spraying on floors or furniture are probably the most undesirable things a cat can do. For a cat scratching the furniture, try spraying the furniture with citrus-based polish or cleaner, and place a scratching post where the cat usually scratches. Most cats will choose a post over furniture. Praise your cat when he uses the post instead of the furniture!

For eliminating/spraying, this could be a medical issue. Most cats, if constipated, have a UTI, or some other problem they will associate the pain with the litter tray and will find softer places to use - often a bed or chair. If this is not the case, re-training the cat how to use the litter tray is strongly advised.

There are many ways to help teach your cat how to behave, and that certain things are not allowed. Cats are intelligent creatures and will quickly understand, although some will test the boundaries, much like human children do. Be patient and vigilant with your cat, and praise them lots when they behave in a manner that you approve of.

There is more to it than the "cat" or "dog" label on the front of the packet or tin. Cats have specialised dietary requirements - cats are strict carnivores. Dogs, while predominantly meat-eaters, can happily scavenge if prey isn't available.

Cats have a higher protein requirement than dogs. Meat is mostly made out of Protein and Fat, and cats use these as their primary energy source.

Taurine: Cats cannot synthesize this compound (unlike dogs and most other mammals), so they must get it straight from meat. Animal tissues such as poultry and fish are natually high in taurine. Not enough taruine in the cat's diet can lead to heart problems and blindness.

Vitamin A is another component cats cannot produce. Dogs can use a compound called "beta carotene" (its what gives fruits and vegatables such as carrots the red-orange colour) and turn that into Vitamin A. Cats cannot. They need to get Vitamin A from meat.

There are also number of fatty acids cats cannot synthesize in their bodies but dogs can, so feeding a cat food specially made for them is the safest option as all the nutrients are included in the food.

There are plenty of cat foods out there, but health wise you can check alot off your shopping list. I can't tell you what brand you should buy, but I can tell you what not to.

Always check the ingredient list for Corn, Wheat, or Soy (Corn Meal included). These three ingredients can lead to kidney problems and, in the end, kidney failure, which is fatal.

Also look out for anything with Meat Byproduct in the name. It may just make you sick, Byproduct is made by grinding up the complete animal (Bones, skin, feathers, intestines and all) and mashing it all together. It can also contain road-kill, deceased zoo animals, and 4-D (dead, disabled, diseased, dying) livestock. It can also (Now to the worst part) contain euthinized cats and dogs. Yep. Other then the complete horror of your pet being (unknowingly) cannibalistic these animals still have the medicine which killed them in there veins. Obviously that cannot be healthy.

I could go on and on explaining horrors (Don't get me started about how some places store pet food) , but choose wisely. Remember, cats are carnivores, and grains are not good for them. Rice is ok, so don't discard something just if it has rice in it. I use Life's Abundance for my pets. I personally know the owner of the company so I can assure you it's safety. Google it, it's not that expensive, and your getting human quality food. But there are plenty of other good brands out there.
