To replace the thermostat in a Chevrolet Cobalt, first ensure the engine is cool and disconnect the negative battery cable. Drain the coolant from the radiator, then remove the upper radiator hose and the thermostat housing, which is typically held by bolts. Take out the old thermostat, clean the mating surfaces, install the new thermostat with the proper orientation, reassemble the housing and hose, and refill the coolant. Finally, reconnect the battery and start the engine to check for leaks and proper operation.

This is a tough fix... and a small star driver (similar to torx) is needed. I managed to find one at a computer store. There are several spring loaded pins in the key mechanism. You have to actually take out the key receptacle. It has been a while since I di this, but I managed to fix it. After removing the key receptacle, one of the pins will be broken. You can remove and discard one or two pins without a problem. Mine worked fine for a few weeks, then locked up again. I called a mobile locksmith to come out. He fixed it and charged me $200.00. Probably less than dealer charge.

My 1999 Regal had the same problem. The problem is a switch in the gear shift mechanism in the console. It intermitantly is working. The dealer wanted to replace the complete shift mechanism in the console for $381. That was to expensive for me so I took the console apart to get to the shifter and disconected the wiring plug on the front of it and using a tester determined which wire was hot and which one went to the steering column to release the key. I then spliced in a small rocker switch to bypass the one in the shifter and mounted it in the console next to the traction control button. Simply flip the switch to on before you turn the car off, remove the key and then flip the switch back to off. The cost was about $7 plus sweat.

There was actually a recall for the power steering. It is covered by the dealership and should be fixed at no cost to you. The recall said the power steering assist will go out and the power steering light will go on.

The brake job at midas would be about $160 for all 4 wheels and then add for whatever the rotors cost to that price, rotors are usually under $20 for the cobalt each.

look in your owners manual but usually you turn the ignition key to the on position ( don't start ) and depress the accelerator pedal 3 times within 5 seconds to reset it.

The transmission dipstick, On a 2008 Chevy cobalt, can be found at the back of the engine compartment, near the center. The dipstick handle will be bright yellow.

This code indicated a mechanical issue, electrical troubleshooting wont help so replacement of the VCT or one of it's related components is necessary.

No the power steering is not necessary to run. Steering will be difficult and I wouldn't personally recommend operating the vehicle with out it.
