Depends on the size of the engine, the ratio of the rear end for the traction and the exhaust system. My last '76 El Cam had a stock 350 c.i. under the hood. I put a posi-trac rear end and put dual exhausts. Replaced the suspension and beefed it up a tad. Cherry Bombed the mufflers and put new Firestone Firehawks, then took the rod on the interstate on a five mile straight. Without no modifications to the engine displacement nor the carb, I maxed out at the top speed of 129 m.p.h. Guess your '71 could do the same, only a five year difference 'cept the wind resistance. Those cars are hard to keep, sold mine for 14 grand.

If you are interested in the value of the car then it would be best to stay stock. Any modifications will bring the price down. I own a 1970 Chevelle SS 396 convertible that I was offered $130,000.00 for it last night. It is all original so you determine what you want. Me, I prefer the price, and no I am not selling at this point.

I'd bet if you called the cam manufactures they would recommend a lower duration cam of about 256 degrees of total duration and lift of about .440" or so. That little engine

will respond real good if in good shape. Don't get with a wild cam as these little engines respond well around these specs. read up and explore, think about a 350 as it costs the same to build, but for around $250 a new cam, lifters , gaskets and probably timing chain up grade would do wonders for that really small block. Be sure you know how to pull the harmonic balancer and change the crank timing gear. Know that you need to pull the oil pan as it is mated to the timing chain cover and maybe buy you a 2 piece cover so if you want to change cams later you wont have to pull your pan again. Be sure you know how to pull that distributor and line it back up on top dead center and pointing at the right cylinder. you will need a puller for the balancer and you might need a lifter puller if those old lifters are stubborn. Read up on these things real good and have your cam break in lube as it is a must. Be sure you know the difference of duration at .50 and advertised duration as advertised duration is usually total duration and that is valve lift off valve seat or open. The easiest way to find out any information on a specific vehicle is to go to a dealership of that vehicle's manufacturer, and ask them to look up your vin number. They should be able to find information that was on the factory build sheet, which will give you a lot of information about that particular vehicle.

1. remove the panel around the switch

2. remove the screws that hold the mounting panel.

3. pull the switch out just far enough so that you can your fingers behind the mounting bracket.

4. there is a small spring loaded pin on the left side of the switch, pull it out and the headlite knob will pull out.

5. remove the retaining nut on the front of the switch that holds it to the mount bracket.

6. wiggle the large black wiring block that plugs into the switch.

1971 El Caminos came with a coil spring, 4 link, posi and non posi 12 bolt Spicer rearend. Standard gear ratio was 3.30 unless ordered with 4.11

Never heard it called a gen 5. I'm guessing you mean 78 and up. If so, it'll fit. The ones I've seen though required getting rid of the A/C box on the firewall....if so equipped. Other than that it's a matter of engine mounts and a set of heavy duty coil springs. One other thing to consider is the diameter of the power brake booster. I'm not sure if that has to be replaced with a smaller one. Most header companies make headers for the swap.

In 1978 there were 1,200 Black Knight El Camino's made. GM stopped production in June 1978 due to a law suit in reference to calling the El Camino a Black Knight. They renamed it the Royal Knight and began production again in late 1978 for the 1979 model. The car came with a 305 4 barrel at this point. 1978 was the last model year the El Camino's came with a 350 motor. Any El Camino made after 1978 only came with a 305 motor. The Royal Knight was produced in the regular El Camino line up until 1980 and then it became a special order until 1983 when it was discontinued. The Black Knight only came with camel colored interior and came in an automatic or a 4 speed (most popular). Car dealers were noted back in 1978 to clone other super sports as the Black Knight to increase sales. The other Super Sports made in 1978 came with a black upper half and a red lower half spelling out Super Sport along the bottom of the car. Unfortunately the only way to tell a Black Knight apart was the color of the interior and the Z19 stamp on the firewall tag. I am a previous owner of a Black Knight and I wish I would have never sold it.

The EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) valve redirects exhaust gases back to the intake manifold and cools the cylinders down. On something that old, it's probably vacuum operated. A vacuum line going into the top of the valve pulls up a pintle. One side of the valve has a hose from the exhaust, and the other side goes to the intake.
