Looking at the front of the engine, the #1 plug wire on the distributor cap is a little to your right of the middle of the engine. It is the first wire to the left of the front right cap fastener. The #1 cylinder is the front right cylinder, again as you look from the front of the engine, and to your right. On your right side the cylinder numbers are 1-3-5-7 then on your left, 2-4-6-8. On the cap, move clockwise and hook them up in the firing order you have listed. Good luck. Pretty straight forward! The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6. The cylinders number from left to right when facing the engine. Cylinders closest to the firwall are 1-3-5. Cylinders closest to the rad are 2-4-6. The coil pack cylinder sequence is, from left to right, 1st coil-5-2, 2nd coil-3-6, 3rd coil-4-2. Hope this helps

The Power Steering unit is located under the alt. Make sure the engine is cold. Very tight area. I connected a rubber hose to the bottom of my funnel.

There are a few possibilities. First off that new fuel pump might be defective. You would not be the first one to buy a defective brand-new part. Secondly the fuel pump fuse or fuel pump relay may be defective. And thirdly that fuel filter may be clogged.

go to the library and get a chiltons repair manual for Chevy 1986.

Remove the dress plate under the steering column. There is a clip there for the shift indicator, if you shift on the column. There are two nuts on studs, one on each side of the column, remove these nuts, and the steering column will drop down. The switch is on top of the column just lower then the fastening bracket. Unplug the wiring, remove the screws that retain the switch, install new one and adjust. Put everything back together.

just follow the top radiator hose to the engine and where it clamps on you will find the thermostat, 2 bolts takes the housing off and the thermostat is under it.

kind of had same problem but turned out to be something else but a guy who had a Monte Carlo pulled up to us and told us if our problem was the security light to turn on the ignition to the on position do not start car and leave for 10 minutes and then turn off and then try starting car and that should reset the security light he said it happened to him and that is what Chevy told him to do and it worked for him.

Drive it for a few miles and see if it goes out, sometimes the computer has to reset itself.

there is no way to tighten your belt it has an automatic belt tensioner if it is making noise it may be the tensioner or the belt also check to see if it routed correctly

depends, sometimes they can last years... sometimes they can just go bad and will need replaced.

If you think you have a coil pack going out, unplug one coil pack at a time... if the car runs rougher than it was, that's not the one. if you find one that when you unplug does not worsen the case then that is the faulty coilpack / sparkplug

Push in, on either side of the hump, about the middle of the bottom edge of the rear seat cushion. This will disengage the wire from the floor clamp. Lift up the cushion and remove from car. This maybe a little difficult using your knee for pushing may help. Remove the two bolts from the the wire loops at the bottom of the rear seat back rest and lift from the bottom. this will disengage the wire from the back rest clip. Reverse procedure to reinstall. These instructions will work for most GM cars 68-72 A-body (Monte, Chevelle. Olds, Buick, Cadillac) plus other applications.

If you have the SS, it's toward the back on the passenger side but its low in the engine compartment. It's kind of behind/underneath the alternator. It's very difficult to get at. I need to check mine out too but I think I'm going to have to take it somewhere.

Quick answer....anything is possible. Detailed answer. Think about what that would require. Your 3800 series sits in your engine block "sideways." This effects your engine mounts, your computer mounts, your firewall, your drivetrain, your....and the list goes on and on. If you're putting a small block in your Monte then you'll have to put in RWD. You'll need a new front axle, you'll have to find a rear axle that fits your car. You'll need a new transmission. You'll need a new shifter. You'll have to drastically modify the underbody of the car to get a driveshaft in there. You'll have to.... Am I making my point yet? You would end up putting so much money into this car it'd be cheaper to just buy a late 80's Monte and drop your small block in there. Your engine mounts are already there and your driveline is already there. So is it possible....yes, but only because anything is possible.
