Chiropractic

Chiropractic is from Greek words meaning done by hand. It is a system of healing or therapy that deals with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems. The method of treatment commonly involves manipulation of the spinal column and other body structures. It is grounded in the principle that the body can heal itself when the skeletal, muscular and nervous systems are all functioning properly.

What happens inside when you twist your knee?

A twisted knee is another way of expressing a sprain in the knee. Sprains being when you extend a tendon or a ligament beyond its normal limit, thus causing pain.

Let's take, for example, your Medial Collateral Ligament. Runs down the inside of your leg connecting your Femur to your Tibia. If it is strained, it is pushed beyond its natural ROM (Range of Motion) and micro-tears form on it, depending on the force of the trauma, other ligaments/tendons may or may not be affected.

How effective is chiropractic medicine?

Are you asking this question after visiting one or before? If you are asking this question after a visit, you likely need a second opinion from another Chiropractor as they are the best source for information regarding the need for chiropractic care. If you are asking this question in general then yes! As with any healthcare provider it is important that you find someone that you can indeed trust. A referral from a friend or relative or reviews on the internet are often helpful but always check with your states' Board to find out if the person is currently licensed and in good standing.

Are there schools in New York city to become a chiropractor?

You can go to NYU to perform your undergraduate degree after high school, and after that you can go to a specialized Chiropractic college to become a chiropractor.

In North America:

Before a student can attend a chiropractic college he/she must complete at least 3 years of an undergraduate university degree (eg: bachelor of science).Students with other undergraduate degrees (eg: BA) are also eligible for chiropractic college, but will find it more challenging without significant background in any of the sciences. Most students at chiropractic colleges have completed their undergraduate degree.

Following an undergraduate degree, chiropractic college last 3 or 4 years, depending on which school you choose to attend. The World Health Organization has stated that to become a doctor of chiropractic a student must attend no less than 4200 hours of schooling in a chiropractic college after their undergraduate degree. Some schools squish this all into 3 years, others spread it over 4 years. Thus, to become a chiropractor, a student must attend a minimum of 6-8 years of post-secondary education (after high-school).

-Research has shown that joint manipulation IS effective for:

Low back pain; neck pain; migraine and cervicogenic headache; cervicogenic dizziness; and several extremity joint conditions.

-Research has shown that joint manipulation MIGHT also be effective for:

Mid back pain; sciatica; tension-type headache; coccydynia; temporomandibular joint disorders; fibromyalgia; premenstrual syndrome; otitis media; and enuresis.

-Research has shown that joint manipulation is NOT effective for:

Asthma; dysmenorrhea; stage 1 hypertension; and infantile colic.

PERSONAL STORIES:

Yes most definitely. My son suffered terribly from headaches (when he was about 15 years old). After a week they were still there. Took him to normal doctor who said must be stress of exams. Good night sleep will do him good!! like heck. Asked my chiropractor about headaches .. took my son to see him, 40 minutes later .. no headache and that type did not occur again. Apparently when my son fell off his horse he damaged his lower back which in turn made him stand not quite straight which then put strain on the neck muscles etc etc which ended up giving terrible headache.

I had a swollen knee for months. Very painful. Ended up seeing normal doctor who said "bursitis" (housemaid's knee) take antinflammatories and if it doesnt go in a month they will have to drain the fluid from the knee. Saw my chiropractor for a different matter and just casually mentioned I had housemaids knee .. he did some simple tests on me and said no it wasnt ... put some "blocks" under my body to realign the sacroiliac and hey presto, no more knee pain and over next couple of weeks the fluid disappeared.

I originally went to the chiropractor as I had torticollis or wry neck. And yup, he got rid of that when the doctors and specialists couldnt.

What is inferentail?

Interferential is a type of electrical therapeutic modality often used by chiropractors or physical therapists.

Interferential therapy has been around since the 1950s and involves the use of 4 electrode pads to create 2 medium frequency currents that cross within the body and the formation of a third current that radiates from the midpoint of those pads & from the inside of the body out.  This third frequency is the "Beat frequency" and is the therapeutic frequency.

This therapy can be used to decrease pain, decrease edema (swelling), or break muscle spasm.  In acute patients the settings are normally set to below the patient's threshold of tolerance (submitis dosis), in subacute or chronic patients the settings are often set to just at the patient's threshold tolerance (dosis mitis).  This therapy is often applied for 10-20 minutes, however the time period may vary based on the intentions of your health care provider.

What is cost containment?

Containment VS Reduction

National Cost already offers their clients the ability to contain costs in more than sixty common cost areas, including equipment maintenance, computer supplies and food service. Lee Ferry of National Cost explains that "containment is very different from cost cutting. A business cannot function in cost reduction mode on a long-term basis. Since cost containment involves controlling increases in costs before they occur, it is a means of controlling future risk." He goes on to elaborate that the "strategies for cost containment can be applied to small companies just as easily as large ones, because they involve the same two groups of people: employees and vendors".

No Fee Guarantee Program

National Cost also has a strict policy regarding customer satisfaction and now also offers a new No Fee guarantee program. National Cost works with each individual client and bases their commission off the percentage of the dollars saved, not a flat fee rate.

If you want to learn more about how a cost containment project can boost your profits. Please contact me via my email: lferry@nationalcost.com or call me at: 888-564-2678.

Is there a national registery for chiropractors?

In the united states there are many regulating boards that chiropractors adhere to.

The national board of chiropractic examiners (NBCE) tests chiropractic students.  The NBCE gives out 5 board examinations to chiropractic students during their educational career.  Every chiropractor in the US must take these examinations.  These examinations are required by all state boards in the US in order to get licensed within a particular state.

That brings us to the next level of boards, state boards.  State boards license chiropractors to practice in a particular state.  Often state boards require background testing, fingerprinting, a doctorate in chiropractic with transcripts of your education, letters of recommendation, passing a jurisprudence examination, and passing the 5 NBCE board examinations.  The state board is the board that regulates a chiropractor's practice and provides a license to practice.  The state board is the board that a patient may make a complaint to if the patient feels that the doctor is behaving unethically.

Finally there are specialist boards.  Chiropractors who have had additional training may sit before a specialist board's examination process to be given the title of being a chiropractic specialist.  Examples of this include the American Chiropractic Neurology Board or the American Chiropractic Board of Radiology.

I often get urges to pop my back after leaning over a desk for a long time and would like to know if it is the leaning over or if I have a back problem?

From what you have described, the urge to "pop" your back is a result of holding a static posture for extended periods. Leaning over a desk for prolonged periods would be considered a static (or unchanging) posture. It is healthy and advisable to move around a little at least every 20-30 minutes, get up off your desk and stretch quickly (it only takes 30 seconds to stretch). Every 30 minutes try standing-up, stretching your hands over your head as high as you can, pushing your chest out, and looking up at your hands at the same time. This will stretch-out your back and allow the joints to replenish the synovial fluid that is required to keep those joints healthy. If your spine "pops" a bit it is nothing to worry about, and is a natural thing.

There is most likely nothing wrong with you. If you are overly concerned, go see a chiropractor in your area for a check-up.

What have people tried to avoid back surgery?

People have tried everything you can think of to avoid surgery! Surgery should always be your last option as it comes with the most serious risks of all other treatments for the back.

Things to try to avoid surgery will be almost entirely dependent on what the problem is...mechanical back pain? scoliosis? herniation? anterolisthesis? stenosis? fracture? cancer?

Can you fix somebody's back by hitting it really hard?

That's not a good idea, by doing that you might cause more harm. To fix someones back first you need to ask yourself why it needs to be FIXED and what is causing the problem. Back pain can be caused by a variety of sources such as the bones, intervertebral discs, facet joints, ligaments, muscles, and viscera to name a few. Not knowing the real cause of the pain will increase the probabilities of injury, while increasing the back pain or stiffness.

I recommend that if someones back needs to be "fixed" then they should seek care from licensed health care professional such as a Chiropractor, Physical Therapist, Acupuncturist, or Orthopedist. I personally recommend Chiropractic as the first choice for evaluation and possible treatment Chiropractors are well trained for the treatment of back pain or any other spine complaint.

What happens when you visit a chiropractor?

When you first visit a chiropractor, just as when you first visited your primary care physician, your chiropractor will take a thorough medical history including the history of your present illness, your past and current medical conditions, medications and therapies currently prescribed, your past surgeries, your social history, your family medical history, and a review of symptoms or diseases related to your body systems.

In addition, your chiropractor will perform a physical examination that will not only assess the musculoskeletal and neurologic systems, but may also investigate cardiovascular, respiratory, peripheral vascular, head and neck, ears, eyes, nose , throat, genitourinary, and abdominal regions.

Further diagnostic testing may be ordered after this initial visit that may include x-rays, laboratory blood testing, MRI, CT, EMG, or other diagnostic studies.

After your chiropractor has made a complete assessment of you, he/she will often give you a report of findings which may occur on the same day or at your next visit.

During this report of findings the doctor of chiropractic will explain diagnoses obtained and what the treatment plan is.

Often chiropractic therapies include physical therapy that may be passive (such as therapeutic ultrasound or electrotherapy) or active (such as therapeutic exercises.

The chiropractor may also include adjustments which involve joint manipulation, manual therapy, acupuncture, clinical nutrition, and/or wellness planning.

The different types of treatments or the adjustment techniques utilized vary depending on the specific chiropractor you have selected.

Can a chiropractor legally work from a home office?

Yes, once a chiropractor has completed an undergraduate degree, a chiropractic degree, and passed all the board exams he/she is allowed to open a practice in whatever type of building they like. The restriction is that it must be within the jurisdiction of the regulatory college whose board exams they write. For example, in Canada, if a chiropractor passes the Canadian board exams and the ALberta board exams then they are licenced to practice anywhere they want in Alberta. If they choose to practice out of their home then that is OK.

Is medical malpractice higher that chiropractic malpractice?

Yes, it is much higher, although the specifics depend on which medical or chiropractic specialty you have, and what country/state you are in.

Medical malpractice insurance can cost anywhere between $20,000 and $100,000 per year, whereas chiropractic malpractice insurance costs anywhere from $100 to $2500 per year.

The difference is due to the higher risk procedures that medical doctors carry out in comparison to chiropractors (eg: drugs and surgery vs spinal manipulation and exercise), as well as the greater severity of the conditions medical doctors treat in comparison to chiropractors (eg: heart attacks and strokes vs back pain and headaches).
