What effects of eating chocolate before going to bed?

All the sugar wears you out . It gets you all excited then you feel worse than before, like an energy drink. They have lots of sugar also.

-----

While sugar (and carbs in general) usually get a bad rep, they are not as bad as they are made out to be. The sugar does not "wear you out," instead, something more profound (biochemically) is happening in your body.

When you eat carbs (especially simple sugars like our common sucrose), an amino acid called tryptophan is taken in by the brain in increased amounts. When this happens, you feel sleepy. Tryptophan is the stuff that turkey is notorious for when it comes to making you sleepy.

Sugar may have the above effects but I also think caffeine is a big part of it. I have made myself acutely depressed by overdosing on tea and come out of it by laying off it. I have learned I cannot even tolerate 1 cup of decaf coffee a day on a sustained basis without getting depressed after a week or so. There seems to be some kind of delayed rebound effect. I believe this is independent of sugar because if I eat one chocolate chip cookie after dinner regularly (not choc batter, just choc chips) I will have this effect. The meal should stabilize my blood sugar, so it shouldn't be the sugar. And the effect is not immediate. In the middle of the day is when I get sleepy, and the effect is not produced on a single dose of chocolate. Very small doses accumulate to cause it. Similarly, as I am allergic to milk, I make myself hot chocolate with soy milk, pure cocoa, and artificial sweetener. No sugar there unless you count the soy milk. Regular consumption of that makes me sleepy. Again the chocolate seems to be the culprit.

When I lay off ALL chocolate consistently, I do not get sleepy during the day.

On a side note, when I was nursing I had plenty of milk until I started drinking one Coke a day. My milk supply became inadequate. Quit the Coke and the milk flooded back. Caffeine is a diuretic and robs you of the fluids you need to make milk.
