Cold and Flu

Questions and answers about the "Common Cold"; symptoms in the upper respiratory tract like sneezing, scratchy throat, and runny nose, but adults don't typically have fevers. Colds are usually caused by the rhinovirus (up to 40% of colds), or Coronaviruses (about 20%), but there are more than 200 viruses that can cause the common cold. Also questions about the seasonal flu, also called "regular flu", caused mostly by Type A and Type B Influenza viruses. Flu starts with similar symptoms as a cold only it hits faster and harder and usually includes fever in adults. Although the "stomach flu" is a common term, it is not a real diagnosis. The proper medical term for stomach flu is gastroenteritis (an intestinal disease, sometimes viral but also bacterial), it is often mistaken for influenza because the flu can sometimes include vomiting and diarrhea.

What is use of maxtra cold tablet?

Maxtra is a cold tablet used to unclog stuffy noses, relieve sore throat pain, and generally ease cold and flu symptoms. Maxtra cannot cure a cold, but it can help you feel better while the cold runs its course.

What does this sound like im not running a fever you have a headache coughing and sore throat?

It could be a cold, but more likely just an allergy. If you have any sinus pressure, then it would point more towards a cold. My suggestion is to rest, don't go beyond your limits, drink loads of fluids, maybe take a hot bath, and be aware of your symptoms and fever. As soon as you suspect a fever is spiking, take fever reducers immediately to avoid possibly worse effects. If you can take about 1500mg of vitamin C (a day) then that would help your immune system fight off the infection. It is not necessary to do so of anything I have said. Those were just my suggestions.

What says the H1N1 vaccine won't cause major health problems for those who get the shots now 5 years down the road?

The A-H1N1/09 vaccine is made the exact same way as seasonal flu shots have been made for decades. Safety monitoring of those vaccines have proven them to be safe with very low adverse effects over a long period of use. There is no reason to expect that by merely using a different strain of virus in the vaccine the long term effects would be any different. That has not been the case when the strains used in the seasonal flu shots are changed each year. The human trials prior to the approval of the H1N1 vaccines proved them as safe and effective as regular seasonal flu shots. The risk of the flu is greater than any risk posed short term or long term by the vaccines to protect against it.

Is H1N1 an antigen?

Yes, anything that triggers your immune system to have a response would be considered an antigen. H1N1 is a virus that causes influenza, and the detection of the presence of the virus will cause our immune systems to attack it. The immune system creates antibodies which can grab antigens to flag them as targets and disable them, which are then attacked and destroyed by other cells from the immune system.

Once the body has developed antibodies to match the antigens of a particular invader , the pattern of those antibodies is stored by the immune system, and duplicates can be readily produced to grab that invader, if it or one like it, is detected again. That is what gives you immunity.

Why don't we become immune to the influenza virus after exposure?

Because the virus changes every year, so immunities developed to protect against one won't stop the other one

Is there an update on the information of who was the first pig to spread the swine flu?

Yes, as a matter of fact....

I do have an update on the investigation for you:

Earlier this afternoon Petunia Pig, with assistance from the divine Miss Piggy, attempted a "vamp and distract play" to double team the guards at Porky's Pen-itentiary. The plan was for Bugs to tunnel unseen to the pig pen and open the gate to free Porky. The escape attempt was foiled as Bugs misjudged the distance to the gate, and was seen peeking out of the bunny hole on the wrong side of the pen. Just then, bystanders heard a loud shotgun blast, followed by Elmer Fudd yelling, "Kill da wabbit, Kill da wabbit!"

Luckily, no one was seriously injured, but just to be cautious, Porky and Bugs called in Doc to tell them what's up. Miss Piggy took Elmer down with a Judo throw and Karate chop, then hog-tied him with a pink satin ribbon from her hair, and left him wallowing in the dirt. She was last seen leaving the area with the off-duty guard.

Petunia continues to root for her man, while Elmer pleads to her, "Pwease wewease me, wet me go..."

No reports from the laboratory yet, but rumors are making the rounds that Scotland Yard has called for special assistance from Hogwart's Head, Albus Dumbledore, in their continued search for Gordy, Butch, and Sundance. Film at 11:00.

Are some people more prone to STDs than others or does everyone have the same risk?

Yes, some people are more prone than others to be infected from STD.

  • Deficiency of the immune system is one of the reason for increased risk.
  • People with other STDs are also more prone to be infected with more HIV as much more of the white blood cells will remain around the genital area.
  • People with skin disorders are more prone to skin breaks that can create points of entry for STDs.
  • A young or pregnant female will have changes in her cervix that increases the risk of infection with STDs.

Can you live if you get H1N1 pandemic swine flu?

Yes, and the vast majority of people around the world who had this pandemic flu did live, many with only mild symptoms of the viral infection. It turned out to be a very rapidly spreading virus but, luckily, with a very low death rate even compared to the "regular" seasonal flu strains.

See the related question below for more information about the death rates of this H1N1/09 influenza.

Can drinking cold liquids while you have a cold make it worse?

You can not take any form of antibiotic, you can not protect your self from any change of temperature, you can not get plenty of sleep, or you can not drink plenty of liquids(meaning water and juice containing vitamin C sodas are completely useless and ruin your teeth). I suggest that you use this form of reference to help yourself when you have a cold. otherise trying to make yourself sicker is a horrible idea.

Does the flu vaccine include antibodies?

No, a flu vaccine triggers our bodies to make our own antibodies. The vaccine includes dead or weakened viruses that can't make us sick, but they will cause the immune response that creates the correct antibodies.

Long term side effects from Swine Flu?

Tamiflu (Oseltamivir) and Relenza (Zanamivir) are the two antiviral medications that are effective for the A-H1N1/09 virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention information on the side effects of these medicines is:

Tamiflu

The side effects reported most often in those people who took this drug were gastrointestinal (i.e., nausea and vomiting). Nausea and vomiting may be less severe if oseltamivir is taken with food.

Relenza

This drug is inhaled and can cause side effects, especially in those with asthma or other chronic lung disease. Decreased respiratory function and bronchospasm have been reported with use of zanamivir. Zanamivir is generally not recommended for use in persons with underlying lung disease such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Other side effects reported by less than 5% of those who have used this drug are diarrhea, nausea, sinusitis, nasal infections, bronchitis, cough, headache, and dizziness.

[More on side effects of these anti-viral medications:]

Reported side effects of oseltamivir are nausea and vomiting. Among children treated with oseltamivir in clinical studies, 14% had vomiting, compared with 8.5% of children getting a "placebo." (A placebo is an inactive substance that looks the same as, and is given in the same way as, a drug in a clinical trial.) Nausea and vomiting might be less severe if oseltamivir is taken with food. In addition, there have been reports of self-injury or delirium among persons with influenza who take oseltamivir. Most of these reports have been in teenagers from Japan, and it is still not certain whether oseltamivir or the influenza virus was responsible for these behavior changes. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises that people taking either of the two medications recommended for influenza (oseltamivir and zanamivir) be monitored closely for abnormal behavior.

Side effects from zanamivir have been reported in fewer than 5% of people participating in clinical trials and have been reported at the same rate in people receiving zanamivir as those being given a "placebo." Reported side effects have included diarrhea, nausea, sinusitis, nasal signs and symptoms, bronchitis, cough, headache, dizziness, and ear, nose, and throat infections. Also, zanamivir should not be used in people with underlying respiratory disease, including asthma.

Do doctors use the same chemicals for the flu shots?

If your question is asking if licensed US doctors who give flu shots use the same vaccine as is used by the public health organizations and other sources of flu shots, the answer is yes. The only vaccines that any health care professional can administer to you for the flu are the ones that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Doctors get the vaccine from the same sources as all other providers of vaccinations. The vaccine ingredients are the same.

If your question is asking if the US doctors who personally take a flu shot use the same vaccines as everyone else, that answer is also yes.

How does the common cold spread in the human body?

The Lytic Cycle describes the process. This is the mechanism by which viruses infect a host, take over the function of the cells, and use them to replicate millions of new viruses in your body. The word lytic is used since the infected host cells are lysed (split open), and killed in the process, as the new virus particles mature and are ready for release in the body.

Common cold viruses infect the cells of the mucous tissue in humans, mostly that of the respiratory system. However, cold viruses also infect the tissues in the eyes, mouth and the rest of the gastrointestinal system with mucous tissue.

Does zinc echinacea or vitamin C help a cold?

Helping a Cold With Herbs, Vitamins, and MineralsRecent clinical research has shown that administration of zinc lozenges can cut the time of suffering from a cold in half. Clinical research regarding echinacea, vitamin C or zinc supplements has not proven their efficacy. The reason Zinc works as a lozenge is that it must be present in its raw form (as an ion) at the site of infection (throat/nasal passage). Zinc appears to interfere with a rhinovirus' fusion with host cells which is required for a virus to enter and take over the cell for replication. Therefore, zinc can reduce the number of infected cells, making it easier for your immune system to clear the cold infection more quickly. Note that citric acid tends to remove these free zinc ions, therefore eating citrus fruit or other foods high in citric acid can cause zinc lozenges to become ineffective. What Helps a Cold
  • Vitamin C is imperative for proper immune function. Unfortunately, vit. C shares the same receptor site as glucose. (All sugars are broken down into glucose.) The more glucose you put in your system, the less chance there is for Vit. C to bind to the receptor sites needed for immune function. People think that taking a massive load of vit. C is helpful when they're sick. This only works because it helps to increase the ratio of Vit. C to glucose. If they didn't consume so much sugar, they wouldn't need to take extra in the first place. The American diet is definitely full of more than it's fair share of sugars.
  • Maybe some supplements, natural and alternative cures can help in some individuals, however, nothing has been studied enough to be totally proven.
  • This is what the latest scientific research shows: Echinacea does not make a significant difference. Vitamin C only helped in a trial done on marines training in arctic climates and it only reduced the length of their cold symptoms by about half a day. Zinc however does help. To get the best effect, it must be used as soon as the first common cold symptoms are felt (achy muscles, runny nose etc). The best formulation for the zinc may be the gel form for the nasal passages, ask your pharmacists if it would be right for you.
  • The first question I always ask myself when reading any 'scientific research' is, "Who did the research and how was the research conducted?" I have personally used Echinacea or Echinacea with Goldenseal for cold symptoms, and, in my experience, it did help. I have not used Zinc. In the study using Marines, I believe the results could be affected by what stage the cold was in when first taking the Vitamin C, how much sugar the study group was consuming (see first post), as well as the amount of Vitamin C given.

What could wrong if you have pain and pressure by your temples nose and eyes but do not have a stuffy nose or a cold?

Allergies maybe? Possible sinus infection? Over use of nasal spray? (this can burn your sinus and cause pain like you describe.)
