Most of the time yes but sometimes if your really good they pick you out and draft you around the age of 14 or 15 (like Bobby Orr). However in most cases yes you have to go to school and play college hockey.

I suggest playing Junior Tier 1 or 2 hockey in the US system or Tier 2 in the Canadian system. Junior Tier 3 in the US is a long shot and most kids that are good enough out of high school to play D3 will chase D1 meaning they will play Junior Tier 1 or 2 in the US or Junior Tier 2 in Canada.

Kids straight out of High School or AAA will find it very diificult to make even the weakest teams in D3.

This is very easy to answer, since it is a MENS division they cant, they would be in the WOMANS division becasue you dont see any males in the womens division.

Per WikiPedia's article on college hockey, the Div II championship was discontinued in 1999 due to a lack of participating schools. Most DII hockey programs had moved up to DI, with others moving down to DIII.

junior hockey is the wave of the future. more premier players are moving away from prep and high school hockey because they dont have to deal with the politics associated with high school hockey. one example: a senior game. often, seniors are not the best players ona team but they get to play because it is their last game. juniors hockey eliminates age brackets and separates players the way they should be separated: by skill level.
