Typically the viewable or visible area of the monitor will be approximately .9 to 1.2 inches smaller than the tube diagonal. With the advent of LCD flat screen monitors, the days of the CRT monitor are numbered except for specialized applications.

HDMI and DVI are compatible connectors for video signals. There are two small but important differences.

First, DVI does not carry audio whereas HDMI includes it as part of the interface.


Second, and most important, is that HDMI supports HDCP, an encoding system to prevent signals being copied. To receive HDCP encoded signals, the display must be HDCP compliant (i.e. licensed to receive and decode the signals). DVI does not support HDCP and therefore a DVI monitor will see garbage rather than a good signal.


For protection of the content, there are no licensed HDMI to DVI converters on the market. Furthermore, the few unlicensed converters are not guaranteed to operate. Indeed, the HDCP system provides for disabling HDCP receivers in the future if they are using unauthorized license keys. HDCP has been introduced in response to people pirating material. Sadly, it also prevents legitimate use of some content such as display on DVI monitors as this question demonstrates.

You can easily fix these by taking a look at the Video Cable in the back of your screen. If you wriggle it about it will work but if you can, see if you can unscrew it and then push it in a little bit more. Nothing is wrong with the power, just the Video Cable.

However there are available HDMI Transmitter and Receiver dongles (and other standards too) that can accomplish the same effect: plug the Transmitter dongle into the computer and the Receiver dongle into the monitor. However depending on capabilities the prices listed for a pair of these dongles (one Transmitter and one Receiver) vary from around $30 to around $700, so check the specifications carefully to be certain it will support your requirements and budget before buying!

Manufacturers allow a certain amount of bad pixels in LCD and Plasma TV's. How many, and how large of an area varies from manufacturer to manufacturer.

If you're going to buy a LCD or Plasma TV, ALWAYS look at it before it leaves the store and examine every inch of the display.

Technically, if the bad pixels that show up fall within the manufacturer's guidelines, and you've purchased an extended service contract either from the store where you got it of from the manufacturer direct, you most likely will just have to learn to live with it.

Here's a GOOD tip: If you're really, really nice (and not whiney, bitchy) to your service technician when he's called out, he may take it upon himself to `cover you' in the paperwork, and take care of you in the interest of good customer relations.

Simply put, the 245BW is more recent but the 244T is better. You'll notice the 244T is more expensive. There is a reason. In addition to many more inputs, USB hub built in, etc., the 244T can pivot 90 degrees to allow a portrait view.
