Who invented computer aided manufacture?

The history of computer aided manufacturing (CAM) starts with the advent of numerically controlled (NC) machine tools. The first automated machine tool, in 1948, used punched paper cards to control the tool. Later, researchers at MIT experimented with punched paper tape and magnetic tape. They built the first true NC machine tool in 1952. The problem then, was how could the data be generated for controlling the NC machine tool? Douglas Ross, a mathematician working in the MIT Servomechanisms Lab, invented a programming language called APT (Automatically Programmed Tool). This was a huge breakthrough and actually one of the very first computer programming languages ever designed. It could be used to create NC instructions relatively quickly and easily. This was the birth of computer-aided manufacturing. While APT programs could simply be typed in on a teletype or keypunch machine, it was always the vision of Ross that a graphical input system would be used. Thus, the first computer aided design (CAD) systems were an outgrowth of the early CAM work with APT. Systems which allowed both the design of mechanical parts and the manufacturing with NC mill and lathe machines were designated CAD-CAM.

What happens when a CPU is interrupted?

When a CPU receives an Interrupt Request (IRQ), it first checks if it must react to the interrupt. So-called Maskable Interrupts allow a programmer to specify that the CPU does ignore it, while Non-Maskeable Interrupt requests must be serviced.

It is important to note that an Interrupt is a way to communicate asynchronously with the CPU - very much like sending an email.

When you send an email to a person, you cannot know at which time the person reads the message, let alone when the person reacts.

A phone call, on the other hand is synchronous (happening at the same time): when I call you, you must answer right now.

Interrupts where introduced to allow tgis email-like communication with slower hardware, like a hard-disk. This way, the CPU can order something from the HD, like "go to this location", the CPU can then return to more important stuff, while the HD seeks. When the HD is done, it sends the CPU an IRQ, which tells the CPU "I am done, talk to me".

The CPU then does a so-called contex-switch, which is a rather costly operation: it must store all the data it was working on earlier in some secure way, normally on the stack and then begin to execute the so-called Interrupt Handler, a piece of software associated with the number of the IRQ.

After executing it, it can carry on doing what it did earlier (after having loaded all the data back into its registers).

The concept of IRQs make multi-tasking possible, here, the OS interrupts each process after its time-slice has expired.

What are some good desks for home office use?

The type of desk that works for you will depend on both the size and layout of your home office space. L-shaped desks are great for having both a work station and meeting station in the same place. If you are severely limited on space, you may want to consider a more basic computer desk or computer armoir.

Why do they say a computer has a computer bug?

from James s huggens website

The Bug

In 1947, Grace Murray Hopper was working on the Harvard University Mark II Aiken Relay Calculator (a primitive computer).

On the 9th of September, 1947, when the machine was experiencing problems, an investigation showed that there was a moth trapped between the points of Relay #70, in Panel F.

The operators removed the moth and affixed it to the log. (See the picture above.) The entry reads: "First actual case of bug being found."

(See the link at the bottom of this page for a much larger version of this picture.)

The word went out that they had "debugged" the machine and the term "debugging a computer program" was born.

Although Grace Hopper was always careful to admit that she was not there when it actually happened, it was one of her favorite stories.

It is actually, on display in the smithsonian i think.

Which is the cheapest type of computer?

Toshiba makes the best laptops. I would highly recommend a Toshiba Satellite M65-S9092. I got mine from Best Buy, and you should to. The Geek Squad is always there to help you when you need them.

Answer 2

Toshiba do not make the best laptop. Each manufacturer has their own good / bad things about them. IMO toshiba, are good value for money, but not the best. There is a heap of manufacturers, ie Acer, Advent, IBM, HP...

If its laptops, then Alienware / Sony are the best regarding spec.

PC's, best quality specification again Alienware / Voodoo.

But there is nothing wrong with going to your local PC builder, and ask them for advice, as to what you want to be able to do, and get them to build one to your specification. Any good quality PC builder, would be happy to do this for you. That way, you get what you want, instead of purchasing one off the shelf, with addon's you may not need. IE why have a 800GTS graphics card, costing $600, (£300), when you will only be using the PC for simple surfing, or writing letters etc.

What is the cost of a basic computer system?

What happens if you spam emails?

If spam a great quantity of emails to someone or send spam/advertising emails to someone you risk having your email address blacklisted. This means when you go to send an email to someone instead of it going to their inbox it will be directed to their spam folder. Basically sending a bombardment of emails can result in getting your account filtered out by spam detectors.

Do people answering your questions or the computer is?

It is people who are answering the questions; there are bots used for cleaning up the site and flagging bad answers.

For registered users (and not "drive by" visitors), you can click on the username at the bottom of an answer. This takes you to the user's profile and message board. Yes, real people answer questions here; this is one of the reasons why you may get more than one answer.

Who made the first light bulb?

The first electric light was made in 1800 by Humphry Davy.

Then the inventor Thomas Alva Edison (in the USA) experimented with thousands of different filaments to find just the right materials to glow well and be long-lasting. In 1879, Edison discovered that a carbon filament in an oxygen-free bulb glowed but did not burn up for 40 hours. Edison eventually produced a bulb that could glow for over 1500 hours.
